Newfound respect for Catholicism

So I was bored in an internet cafe and went onto youtube and came across this debate between a Catholic priest, Father George Coyne who is also a well respected astronomer and Richard Dawkins whom I'm sure you all know.

Needless to say, I was expecting something along the lines of Dawkins vs Creationists (i.e > fairytales vs fact) because the priest in question is American.

Well lets just stay I am absolutely stunned by this priest, comes across as extremely intelligent and in my opinion, Richard seems pretty stunned himself.

The video was already discussed on the A&A forum a while back. You might be interested in reading it if you can find the thread.

How new found respect for an intelligent person who is a catholic priest? How could one person seriously change your views on the catholic church?

I'm sure its not significantly different to how many atheists claim dawkins literature has changed their opinion of religion.

In fairness we could ask "how could one person provide the basis for 2000 years of blind faith".

What's this blind faith that you speak of?

Most of us would realise that there are plenty of intelligent articulate people in both the priesthood and in America.

It reminds me of my philosophy professor at University in England who handed me back my first paper and said, "Congratulations, you got the best mark in the class - I was most surprised since I'd heard you were a pastor and also were Irish!" (He didn't say whether the pastor bit or the Irish bit should have beeen the biggest handicap to my intellect).

I'll go out on a limb and say it was the pastor bit.
