like the time Aer Lingus put the slant on the shamrock........ :pac:

Why do they need a new crest anyway? Hopefully it will only be a slight modification.

I hate to see professional sport meddling with club logos and crests etc. They're supposed to represent the club / organisations' history and tradition ffs

The one on the churchill cup jersers seemed slightly different. Could that be the new crest or is that because it's the 'A' squad?

The crest is what is inside the shield (or in the 'A' team's case, a sphere).

It has been on brief but very public display recently. Some of you just haven't been looking hard enough ;)

is it the emblem that's on the lions crest?

The reason professional sports has seen a change in all of the logos of various teams (mainly representative) is to allow the organisation behind the team to commercially exploit the branding. For instance - the original Irish Rugby crest which would have also appeared on pretty much all of the other Irish sporting teams shirts was the very simple 3 shamrock display that you see as part of the Lions crest. Because this had been used by so many different organisations and had been in the public domain for so long it is not possible to copy right and so anyone can make official looking replica gear. That's the same reason you now have fancy looking logos for the provincial teams, same reason all of the GAA teams stopped using the county emblems and designed new ones.

I'd prefer to see the simple emblems return - but you can't argue with the commercial problems caused by the above.

    there are subtle differences

are they releasing it with the new jersey?

Looks like it's just been reduced to one colour and a change in the IRFU lettering from being on the scrolly type thing to being under the crest.

Hope no money was spent on this...but undoubtedly there's some consultancy after making millions from it.

Seriously if someone got paid for that we should all be looking for money off the next set of tickets.

Edit - although the longer I look at them side by side the more I think the new one looks way better than the old! Damn optical illusion things.

Ticket prices to be raised to pay for it:rolleyes:

I'd prefer the older design. The new one seems somewhat stilted. Did they really need a new one anyway?

    HEY!, , , , , , , that re-imagining cost Aer Lingus 14million! Seriously!

    Cheers Bleg.

I don't like the new one as much. The old one has a nice traditional feel about it and seems more rounded. Ah well.

Different subject I know but ticket prices were in fact reduced for next season (as announced in the Irish Rugby Supporters Club).

I much prefer the old one! The new one isn't too bad but I don't see why they had to change it tbh!

Is this just another tool to help sell the new jersey? People see a new jersey and a new crest may be more willing to buy it...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,352 ✭✭✭funky penguin

I'd like to see it in the context of the new jersey.

It seems very back to basics...hopefully its a good omen for the jersey.
