Prevent a Mac from running slow?

    I use my Mac daily and it still amazes me how fast it performs compared to my Windows PC. Anyway, I really don't want it to go the same way my PC went by running slow and sluggish. What I can I do to prevent this? Is there any way I can perform a clean up or something similar?

    You don't really have to.
    A good piece of advice is not to install various software that you won't really be using in the end.
    Your system can do many things straight out of the box. Instead of looking for third-party solutions you might want to check out the factory supplied ones first.

    You should do this every once in a while too..

    Yeah, just repair permissions every now and then and you'll be grand. Some posters will probably recommend that you use OnyX or some other clean-up app but it's really not necessary. I know ex-Windows users feel naked unless they're running Anti-virus and doing constant clean-ups but Macs don't require much maintenance.

    I don't mean to hijack the thread but I just verified the disk permissions for the first time in ages. There are about fifty permissions that differ and can be repaired however I got the following warnings that cannot be repaired;
    Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare/afpLoad" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskManagement.framework/Versions/A/Resources/DiskManagementTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    Warning: SUID file "sbin/umount" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    Warning: SUID file "bin/rcp" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/quota" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/rlogin" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/rsh" has been modified and will not be repaired.

    Is this acceptable or is it something that warrants further investigation from Apple, which wouldn't be a big deal as thankfully the machine is still under warranty.

    If you're using Leopard that's perfectly normal.
