OK So I'm supposed to be going on holidays with my gf for the next week in croatia - dubrovnik and hvar. Supposed to be leaving on wednesday - just checked the weather and its rain and thunderstorms for basically our entire trip. Does anyone one know if we could travel onto anywhere else from here that we might get some nice weather, is there a good train service or even if flights from dubrov to another airport would be reasnobly cheap? I know its a bit vague but basically don't want to spend my weeks holidays in a storm!!!

Last time I was in Dubrovnik in July we had serious electric storms most nights. You could see the storm clouds building up during the day from the
heat and at night there was plenty of thunder and lighting but apart from
one or two downpours it was mainly dry for the 3 weeks there. Thunder
doesn't always equal rain there from what I experienced ;)

Yeah but at the same time i was going for a sun holiday - not going to be much of that if there are clouds all day. is it too late to change flights to another destination with aer lingus I wonder?! tried ringing but just holding for ages....

From what i'm reading the weather in most of europe will be **** for the next 2 weeks. There are no trains to Dubrovnik and tbh the only option might be south towards Greece.

Other option is stay at home and enjoy the sunshine in Ireland!

I was in Dubrovnik last July and had similar forecasts before I went so wasn't looking forward to going at all. However apart from the first day when we had a few hours of serious rain/thunder, it was lovely and sunny the rest of the time.

If you did want to travel, I'm not sure but think you can get ferries to Italy??

I loved Dubrovnik incidentally & would go back again any time.

I going there in 3 weeks. Can I ask if you can recommend anywhere to stay and did you go to the islands or do any day trips?

A lot of the weather sites tend to put up the worst that will happen, it doesn't necessarily mean that the entire day is going to be a thunderstorm, generally speaking when there are thunderstorms they last an hour or so and then everything clears up and you're left with lovely weather. I wouldn't go cancelling or changing anything yet.

We stayed in a private apartment just opposite the beach in the town itself: see www.ownersdirect.co.uk. We were only there for a week so mainly stayed around Dubrovnik itself. I loved the old town and although it was small, there are loads of places to eat & drink in the nighttime. Avoid the old town in the day time as all the tourists come in on the cruises & it gets really full. We did one day trip around some of the islands and it was enjoyable although the food & wine provided wasnt wonderful - there are a load of tours on offer in the harbour area of the town and you can haggle the prices. Make sure you go to the bar that's on the side of the rocks outside the city walls (cant remember the name & can be hard to find but worth it) and dont walk the city walls in the daytime or the heat will kill you.
