We can't really give you advice on what spec to get if we dont know what it's going to be used for.

I would not reccomend a netbook for cheap workhouse laptop. the best hardware goes to the larger laptops, but the 17s and 19s have much more expensive LCDs. the 14 or 15" is where you wanna shop

    would be using for

    email, internet,

music and video, webcam and skype,

word, excel, powerpoint etc, suitable to do course work in college,

gaming not important but would be a nice extra

would like one that has strong enough security features or some info on what security to add to the laptop e.g encryption and anti virus software etc

Laptops never come with extra security features that are any way useful. Security wise you have to load up with a good AV(Avira free AV is a good free one) and use your head. The ways people are infecting their machines are just plain stupid.

"oh hey I got a message on msn from a friend I havn't seen in years saying they have an embarrasing movie of me, and they posted the link! I hope I dont look stupid in it! *clicks link*"

    For 500max..

Theres a tonne of them there, I'm sure half of them have the same specs, just look for something with 2GB+ RAM, a 320GB+ Hard Drive and a 2Ghz+ Dual-Core CPU.
