I thought this might be of interest to some people here. It is a documentary on the South African special Task force (who backup the police on a daily basis).

They are not strictly military but police, however in any other country on earth they would be considered a elite military unit. The statistics are mindblowing, 25,000 murders per year, a police officer killed every 36 hours, massive police corruption due to low pay & police men having to live in ghettoes alongside gangsters, 15-20 strong ak47 armed gangs attacking money transports (routinely executing all witnesses).

The documentary is in 3 episodes, Episode one has parts 1-6 each 10 mins long. I watched the first 2 episodes last night and it is very impressive.

They routinely handle kidnap/ hostage situations, bank robberies, there is also some interesting footage there of how to intercept a gang of tourist robbers on a motorway.

It also covers their selection procedures & training (episode 2) which is very very impressive in my view.

a policeman killed every 36 hours....wow just wow...

if it happened here the policewouldnt know what to do... id say the law to allow them to carry guns would be brought in swiftly if even 1 or 2 were shot

My old boss lives in Jbourg, and believe it or not each police station has a "panic" alarm that calls these lads out.

Also told of if you think you are being followed you ring your housing estates security company, and they send out an armed escort to get you back to your house.

And to think the world cup is on here next year.

I was over in SA a few weeks ago...the most unsettling thing you will see over there is "Fire-Arms Check in" in some of the night clubs they have a check in desk where the locals check in the guns before they enter the club.

Considering most fights happen outside nightclubs and after the patrons have been gargling all night at under a €1 a pint. They are up to their gills in preservative they then go and retrieve their pistolé from the check in desk. Can you imagine the carnage outside McDonalds on a Sat night in Dublin if that was the case over here?!
