Push not working with Gmail

I have enabled push in the settings (3G s) but it doesn 't seem to be working. Do I need to ring O2 or apple to activate something?

I assume you have a schedule set up?

Gmail doesn't support push on the iPhone, only on Android and the Palm Pre.

A schedule shouldn't be needed for push perhaps your are confusing it with fetch?

D'oh, that's what I get for not thinking about it.

Yeah, under the fetch options you have your push and your schedule. mobius is right, though the 15 minute schedule is as good as push

Not at all, with true push you can pretty much stop texting, and being charged for texts.

And use email instead? I like the idea, but I don't know nearly enough people with push email services to make SMS redundant. In fact nobody I know uses push email on their mobile device.

I hear what your saying, I find most of my friends in the UK have push email, so it saves me a packet on texting them.

The only downside is you have to give them your gmail username/password. If you don't have a problem with that, then PUSH works perfectly.

if i set fetch to 'every 15mins' does this hit the battery hard or is it very light on the battery?Thanks

If you have mobile me account you can forward your gmail to it and then set the outgoing server to your gmail acount. So any emails you recieve will be pushed from the mobile me account and if you sent an email it will send from your gmail account.

The fetch schedule isn't too hard on the battery. I find that Push destroys it though. I can't use push email as the battery won't last the day.

Another option and I know most people won't go for it as it's a bit of a pain.
Yahoo mail supports push. I've tested it and it's just as fast as mobile me mail.

So just set up a Yahoo account and auto forward your gmail to it. Then just use the yahoo account on the phone. You'll get messages as fast as sms.

I forward all my mail accounts to the mobile me account and it works fast enough. I was thinking about doing the yahoo thing when the mobile me subscription is up because the web interface for mobile me is rubbish.

Why would you pay that a month, when you can get MobileMe for around the same for a yearly sub, and it's actually designed with the iPhone in mind!

Because I need to use my own domain and email address, with mobile me I am restricted to a me.com email address
It works perfectly with iphone, is just as good as mobile me, costs around the same roughly but I can use any domain I wish.
