Started my laptop a few days ago to a message at boot up saying there was a problem with a file and would I like it fixed. Did the yes option. It went through about 10min of checking files and now my media player won't run get the following message

MSVFW32.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.

and a second message saying window media is not installed properly.

also, when i try to open a windows explorer it runs fine until I click on an icon, then it shuts down.

    Any help?

    Thanks guys

I presume the msvfw stands for microsoft video for windows... I'd try reinstalling windows media player (should be able to get the latest one from microsoft.com)... hopefully it'll replace that and any related files with working/compatable versions.
I get the explorer crashing thing too sometimes if I leave an explorer window open in a directory that contains divx/xvid files... I think there's some extra crap windows does, trying to gather more information about the files and employs plugins to do so... once you fix media player it'll probably go back to normal.

I've tried d/l'ing media player 11 again but get told that I have a more recent version (11.0.6001.7004) installed and can't put on an older version (11.0.5721.5146) over it :(

    mini bump to this...

Hasn't bothered me much in the past while. Used divx to play my movies.

Since I came to Ireland for a holiday its been a pain. Rented out dvds and realised I couldn't play them.

Laptop expects media player as default to play the dvds. Tried changing it to something else but the only option is media player or media centre ... bah!!!

    Any help guys?

    thanks

Try VLC Player, very good app, free, handles everything.

Other than that, it's down to 'repairing' windows media player... which I'm not sure how to do... there might be something for it under add/remove programs, or you could look into using the built in system file checker (sfc), which scans the system for all the correct versions of various system files, and replaces them from the cd, etc. Using a restore point might be another option... although there's always the chance of making things worse.
Personally I've gotten used to nuking windows and reinstalling it when things get screwed up.

Might do a restore when I get back to NZ.
Bought a portable hard drive yesterday and started backing up everything just in case.

    Cheers.
