Is it possible to delay a direct debit by a week? I just want to put back the payment of my car insurance, which is due out on wednesday, by a week

No, direct debit is where your insurance company take the money rather than the bank sending the money to them.
You would need to contact your insurance company and ask them to delay.

Ring the insurance company and ask if this is possible. I'm sure they wouldnt mind

Ring the company asap. Sometimes the request can only be stopped a while in advance and may already be in motion depending on when they operate.

Ring the bank and ask them to give you a short term overdraft to cover the week.
