Which .22 ammunition do you prefer using for hunting? Subsonic, standard or high velocity?

For Rabbits I use Winchester HP Subs exclusively.
Any HV rounds are very noisy and not as accurate IME.

    + 1 as above

I'm using Eley standard and Lapua Super subs and a SAK mod on the end to keep the noise down.

Winchester HP Subs for me too.

Try out a box of the Eley subs before you but a case of them - over priced in most places - also they're a very dirty round and they literally stink
If you have a CZ you'll find it hard to close the bolt on them too.

I LOVE the smell of a Eley subs! and I find they work perfectly in my CZ - better than the Winchesters. But then you pays your money and you takes your pick.
Have to say though that the .22 has been playing second fiddle to the 17HMR recently. I cant believe the ranges that I have clattered rabbits at in the last week.

Eley subs for everything bar targets(Knocking fox with these in one shot).I use Eley sports for target.

    Good for you milkerman

A lot of CZ owners have trouble with the eley subs - it's certainly not just me. I found follow up shots awkward when you have to jam the bolt closed.

It came down to common sense for me in the end - winchester subs shoot just as well with none of the drawbacks.

To the OP - best to try everything you can get your hands on.

shezer - Shooting fox with .22 subs..........not very sporting is it - unless it's at the end of a dig as you pull the terrier out ;)
No doubt you'll reply that you've never had a runner

It is sporting if the shooter is consistantly able to kill foxes cleanly with the vast majority (say 95%+) of the shots taken.

I personally do not consider sending a terrier into a fox den then digging out the fox to be sporting but I wouldn't tell you your not a sportsman for doing it.

I believe in each to their own, as long as it's legal.

It is slightly more epensive for ammo than 22lr, effective range is approx 125+ yards depending on your ability, louder (no subsonic ammo available) than 22lr but is a good all round hunting and casual target round.

CCI ammo gives trouble in a lot of actions :(

Has anyone any experaince with these HORNADY 22 WMR 30 GR V-MAX.. Haven't got the rifle yet still waiting for my liecence to get back just trying to pic an idea out as to what they peoples general recomendations are... Cheers

We had CCI subs before and you couldn't close the bolts on them. Headspacing is a major issue, especially if you have a tight match chamber.

I've often had trouble extracting live rounds of CCI in my CZ also it groups like 00 buck.

.22 subs are not for fox - end of story - don't argue for the sake of arguing - you know it's not right.
Inside what range do you recon you'll get your preferred 95% - how many fox a year will you call in that close.

This is a stupid discussion - it's like the arguments on here about deer shooting - even the 6.5 isn't up to it according to most  So will they come on this thread backing me up :p

I don't shoot foxes for sport - I will shoot the odd one when a farmer absolutely demands it.
You say terrier work isn't sporting - well the thing even most of the antis have cottoned on to about it is that it has a 100% success rate - no wounded animals. That's not to say we don't have cowboys at it too who unfortunately tarnish the rest of us giving the ignorant a false impression of what the sport entails.

.22 subs are ideal for humane dispatch on fox size animals and somewhat bigger too IMO.

Must admit that I had way more problems with CCI in the CZ than the Eley.

did any of youes ever try .22 shorts. I know of a back garden of about 30 yards with rabbit problems and was wondering at about 70 ft/lbs would there be any more safety issue than a F.A.C. air rifle.
These are also called pigeon bullets but i am guessing they would be a bit much for shooting in to trees ?

Today I was target shooting and compared Remington .22 hollow subs and CCI .22's - shot 50m and 100m - and the Remingtons seemed to stay better / closer together.

hey guys i heard the win 22 subs are good before but local gunshop says dere impossible to get now where are use gettin em?

I used Winchester lasers for the first time there recently when out rabitting.

Decent groups and did the job at the end of the day. I've never used lead rounds on live quarry, is there much of a difference between the hollow points and the lead rounds?

you should never shoot a fox with a .22lr,stick to the rabbits..;)
it just doesnt have the take down power, even a 177hmr has a better
take down power than the 22lr,
    thats from experience,
    stick to the 223...

Ive been getting fox close enough to take out so far in one shot with sub .22lr.Otherwise i would not use them. The day i hit a fox and it doesnt drop will be the day i stop using my .22 and ill upgrade calibre rifle....Honest i would only call close enough for one shot otherwise i wouldnt take the shot.
