I haven't seen the incident so I can't really say too much about the fairness of it or not.

    Very very harsh imo.

Wasnt even worth a yellow card let alone a two week ban.

A banning is a bit harsh, imo.

Have you got a link to the clip?

(edit - saw clip thanks to Teg Veece)

No, that was a harsh ban, looks to me like Botha only went to clear players out of the ruck.

Agreed. That's just the physicality of the game.
Berger and his nimble fingers on the other hand ...

Is that it? Pffft. Harsh. Burger on the other hand; hopefully he'll get minced.

That's when he dislocated his shoulder isn't it?

Bakkies should then be banned 2-3 times per match as he does the same thing in every game. Hardly see how this was dangerous but probably because the prop got injured.

That's harsh, didn't seem much worse than O'Driscoll's no-arm tackle.

Bakkies not available for second test.
Bakkies Botha will miss the final Test as his appeal has been rejected.
Botha was banned for two weeks for clearing out Adam Jones without binding on a player and the sanction has been upheld at a hearing on Thursday morning. The Springbok coaching staff felt the penalty was harsh and this ruling will not have impressed them once more.

We will definitely loose a bit of our physical edge now. Johann Muller is good but not great. Too much of a soft player I think.

    Thats Very harsh.
It almost looks like he tried to use his left arm there.

Could be a penalty, very poor form there.......

Yep, that's a harsh call I think. I don't think that would even have been a yellow card?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,530 ✭✭✭dub_skav

    I wouldn't even call that a penalty.
I do believe he was involved in a bit of handbags throughout the game that may have warranted an extra 10 on a few occasions, but that was just a quality clean out - h ecan feel very hard done by.

I think Shaw put it up to him good and proper and his loss may not be as big an impact on the boks as it would have been if Alun Wyn Jones had been starting.

Personally, I believe that was a completely illegal tackle. The fact that the SA Forwards coach sees nothing wrong with it baffles me considering:

    A. Any player joining a ruck or maul must bind with at least one arm around the body of a team-mate, using the whole arm.

    B. You are not supposed to charge up to a maul or ruck without binding onto a player already in the maul / ruck

This may be considered another one of those uninforced rules in rugby but they exist!

In relation to BOD, that was also a terrible tackle and he's lucky not to be cited imo.

    It wasn't a tackle.
And it barely qualified as a ruck.

But you are right, it is illegal.

As for O'Driscoll, I certainly hope you are never responsible for anything, because there was clear intent to use the arms.
If he was cited and the video was considered, he would be cleared.

Where did those "rules" come from

    http://www.irb.com/mm/Document/LawsRegs/0/Law10EN_7702.pdf

    Law 10 j
Players must not charge into a ruck or maul without binding onto a player in the ruck or
    maul.
    Penalty: Penalty Kick

    Law 17.2 c
Placing a hand on another player in the maul does not constitute binding.
    Penalty: Penalty Kick
