Summer skiing- what clothes ?

Heading over to Zell am See next week for a few days. Every year when we are in Austria on the slopes we say that we must come back in the summer for the air and the exercise - this is the year we finally get around to doing it.

We were thinking of some summer skiing on the glacier there. I'm sure we can hire skis for a few days as reqired. One thing we haven't worked out is what sort of clothes we will need. It will be cold and wet I guess, but obviously not as cold as a cold Winters day. I guess a light shirt, spare long sleeve top (for when it actually is really cold) and then a light waterproof shell is what we need for the top and light trousers and light waterproof bottoms for the other end. Am I being hopelessly over-optimistic or over-pesimistic ? Everything I read says that the snow gets slushy around 1200-1300, so I can only guess that falling over in that (which I won't be doing, obviously, ahem, :o) won't be fun if you aren't waterproof.

Last year I rode in my lightest snowboard pants (with all vents open) and just a t-shirt and hoodie on top. If you have a gore-tex shell jacket, bring that too in case it actually snows or rains. If you have any specific base layers for your upper body, then they'll do fine as well.

Just back from Kaprun. It seems they have had a good/bad season so far, depending on what way you look at it. Good - weather has been cold and it snowed a few weeks back (on the glacier, not lower down) so the snow is still in good condition. Bad - weather has been cold and it rains most days so the weather conditions aren't great and you get thoroughly wet.

We spent a good few hours up there, but the kids eventually got tired of doing the same few runs over and over. I could have stayed a few more hours or come back the next day but the kids had got enough of a kick out of it and wanted to move on to the next sport.

The cloud was really low and it was raining so it was a bit hard to tell whether the very top was open or not. We got the cable car (I forget the name) up to the top but when we got out it was pretty miserable and the only things we could see were closed off runs, so we got the little shuttle back down a little and took it from there.

Ski hire was a bargain from the Intersport up the mountain - looked brand new and with a 'Berg & Bad" card it came to the grand total of €35 or so for 2 adults & 2 kids for boots & skis for the day. Lift passes were similarly discounted. I can't remember the total but it was 50% discount with the card. Mind you, the card costs €65 for an adult, but it gets you loads of other discounts in the Zell am See area so it's worth it.
