Apps won't install on iphone

Hi All, I did the software update last week on my 2G iphone. All was grand... or so I thought.
I bought an app on itunes on my macbook today and synced the iphone to itunes. Everything else updated but there's no sign of the app appearing on my phone. I've done it about 5 times at this stage. I've double checked to make sure the sync applications box is ticked and it is.
Also, I've only just noticed that the app store icon is missing from my iphone. I didn't take any notice of this after the software update but it must have disappeared when I did that. Any ideas? It's driving me mad!

check the app store details for the apps, there are a fair few apps that are 3G or 3Gs only now and they won't install on the 2G.

It should say at the bottom of the app description.

If it's a OS version problem you should have a prompt after syncing telling you why it failed. It may just be a corrupt download though, this happened to me before and I deleted the app from itunes, re-downloaded it and it worked fine afterwards.

I don't think it's that. I had a few free apps downloaded before the software update that disappeared when I did the update. They won't sync either.

The requirements on the app I just downloaded are:

Compatible with iPhone and Ipod touch. Requires iPhone OS 2.2.1 or later.

So I think it should be fine?

actually the applications have synced. If I do a search for them I can find them but no icons are appearing for them.
Anyone know how I can sort that problem?

have seen a bit online about apps getting wrong icons, no icons etc. Not sure if there is a solution yet but think there was an apple support thread on it. Think I saw the reports on tuaw.com

    edit, yep here
