Is This Too Much Protein?

I take protein shakes twice a day, everyday, mornings and after sessions. In each shake I put 25g whey protein, 5g creatine and 5g glutamine. I feel fine from this, no upset stomach etc.

My question is this. In trying to get the 1.5g protein per pound of bodyweight daily intake, I am thinking of taking 2 scoops of protein with each shake in stead of one scoop. This way I will be getting 100g of protein daily from my shakes - even on my off days, i workout 4 days a week - as oppose to 50g of protein.

Is this bad or wrong etc.

2 scoops/50grams per shake is fine

You'll be fine OP, there used to be a myth about higher protein intake and kidney damage but what from I have read that remains a myth. Although I hope you aren't lifting weights, at least for your hair's sake!:D

Is whey your only source of protein? Have you no meat/ dairy/ fish in your diet.

Current thinking suggests that protein intake is preferably spread out over the course of the whole day as opposed to one or two monster sittings for a number of reasons:

    1. It's estimated that no more than 50g of protein can be obsorbed by the body on one sitting (I've read this numerous time in numerous articles but tbh I haven't yet seen the evidence for it but howandever)

    2. Protein is satiating and so helps you to control your appetite, eating it throughout the day helps you stick to your pre-determined meals/ snacks and not get cravings for sugary foods

    3. Regular protien intake helps keep your body in a Nitrogen positive nad therefore anabolic (muscle building) state

    4. Although proteing can stimulate an insulin response, it's a low steady response as opposed to the sharp increase produced when eating high GI foods and is therefore a good food type for managing the hormone.

Drinking two 50g scoops a day won't kill you, but consider the above points also.

Should you maintain taking 2 shakes on off days aswell?

You are getting your whey from myprotein.co.uk aren't you?

From my protein.co.uk for Impact Whey:
    Nutritional Information (per 30g):
    Energy 118.0cal
    Energy 497.0kJ
    Protein (dry basis) 24.6g
    Protein (as-is) 23.6g
    Fat 2.1g
    Carbohydrates 1.8g
    Calcium 150.0mg

So, if you are getting 118 cals from a 30g serving you will be getting ~393 cals from 100g. Keep this up for a few months and you'll put on fat (through excess calorie intake) if the rest of your diet is not in order.

Have you worked out your overall calorie intake? Are you currently eating too much / too little?

Am I right in saying that if you ingest more than 50g of protein in one go, you just whizz out the excess? Therefore no harm done really.

Having said that though, surely the amount of protein you can absorb from food must have something to do with your metabolism, bodyweight etc.?

Ya thats the one I'm takin. Sure isnt 393cals similar to like 3 kit kat bars or somethin. The rest of my diet is good. 2 litres of water daily, 4 fruit daily, only snack on nuts, get good amounts of protein, no white carbs like white pasta/rice/bread, only wholemeal stuff etc. No crap food at all.

Constant ingestion of surplus calories will cause weight gain, but by and large a lot of excess protein is excreted out, yeah - no harm done except to your wallet :D

I vaguely remember reading something like this:

High protein levels can sometimes saturate the kidneys mechanisism for dealing with high protein levels in blood. Leads to a low pH in urine, and pain when passing it out!

I have heard the 50g thing, but as g'em said never saw a study. Whey is said to be absorbed fast, but the likes of meat & chicken is not. To be nasty for a minute I got sick while ill once and saw undigested chicken I had eaten hours before.

How many protein meals a day do you eat? How long are the intervals between ingesting protein? What I'm getting at is that the important thing with protein is that you are getting it in on a regular basis (every 2-3.5 hours) to enable your body to constantly work at repairing your muscles. Therefore, you would be far better off taking 2 separate 25g servings with a 2-2.5 hour gap rather than one 50g serving.

However, if you are already getting protein in every 2-2.5 hours (should equate to 6-8 meals per day) and are looking to increase the amount of protein in one particular meal, then yes, doubling scooping your protein shake would be a good way of doing so.

If you take in excess calories consistently you will put on fat. It dosen't matter if the calories come from kit kats or whey shakes.

Detail your daily food/drink intake so people can advise you.

    e.g.
    8am: porridge
    10:30am: 3 kit kats ;)
    etc...

    LOL :D

Look I just cant do the 6 to 8 meals a day and I dont really want to. Everyday is not the same for me, I don't have my meals at regular intervals, I know for best results I should, but whataya gonna do.

Heres a vague idea of how I eat through the day. Mornings and evenings shake with protein 50g/creatine 5g/glutamine 5g. Throughout the day, 2 litres of water. Between meals I only snack on fruit and nuts. In total I would say I have around 4 to max 5 meals a day, I try to eat somethin evey 3 hours. All meals have good protein, good fibre in form of wholemeal bread, pasta or rice. Little fat in form of dairy etc. I eat no s**t.

This is a rough guide to how I eat through day and its the best I can do. In all fairness I think its pretty decent and it will get me results.

Just want to make sure I'm not harming myself with the 50g of protein in each shakes or that I am not wasting the protein also.

I would highly doubt that you're harming yourself by doing so. With regards to the wasting protein part, it's pretty hard to know. Can your body absorb 50gs at a time? I just don't know. As I said, 2 25g servings at 2.5 hour intervals would be a better idea, at least then you know you're not wasting it.

Ya might give that a go. With regard to the 2 servings of 50g, its just easier.

Just to ask a quick related question:

I currently work out 4 times a week, and would like to start increasing my protein intake too. As I work the usual 9 hour day, I can manage to eat little and often due to my breaks.

My question is, is it possible to mix protein shakes at home and store them in a flask for the day untill needed without having them clump, or go bad?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,485 ✭✭✭✭Khannie

why bother? Put the powder in the shaker then add the water just before you drink, no?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7 Lorakar

That would be an idea, but the whey protein I get is in a large drum, I'd rather not have to mix it up on site aswell as I use milk and don't want to upset the boss by using it all up. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Dude just get one of those sports water bottles, put your powder into the bottle before you head out, when you're at work fill up the bottle with some water and bobs your uncle, people wont even know your takin a protein shake because you wanna get massive :D

    I'm already 'massive'! ;)

That'll do though, my brain is completely fried, thanks for the tip!
