Does look to be a fresh take on the vampire genre. Plus 2 strong actors in Dafoe and Hawke certainly helps.

Definitely one to mark in the calendar.

Great trailer but it shows far too much

    This looks absolutely fantastic!
In the year 2019, a plague has transformed most every human into vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the fractured dominant race plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher works with a covert band of vamps on a way to save humankind.

The good: Ethan Hawke, Sam Neill and Willem Dafoe star in a new take on the vampire genre (plus points for using Placebo's fantastic cover of 'Running Up That Hill' in the trailer).

The bad: Not fecking released until January 2010 in the US.. so God knows when we'll see it.

    Trailer

It does look good with a very good cast, interesting that it is written and directed by two brothers from Germany. Don't know anything about them. Lets hope there are some good releases in between so the wait is not that long.

Nice one, i love a good vampire flick, this looks quality, how creepy are those vampire eyes?!. Interesting casting here, three actors i haven't seen around in a while in Neill, Hawke and Defoe, i'll look forward to it.

Daybreakers is a film I've been cautiously looking forward to for some time. I remember reading quite a few interviews with the Spierig brothers when Undead was coming out, and I had been looking forward to that as well, but ultimately it was a big dissapointment. I think judging from the trailer they've come quite a long way as directors though.

I think it looks amazing, heard about it a good while ago and thought it was gonna be a steaming pile cause of the cast and the directors.Hopefully will be the anti-Twighlight thats needed to reinvigourate the vamp flic.Hopefully Guillmerodel Toro's new book will get turned into a movie, the promo for it makes it look fangtastic.

That looks interesting & is certainly a unique idea in Vampire film lore; it's always the assumed line of thinking that vampirism is a disease & something to be fought - and thus the enemy - rather than here where (almost) everyone embraces the change. Scary idea really when you think about it.

I'm always willing to support a movie that counters the "Twilight" / Ann Rice idea of the vampire as tragi-romantic outsider

Whats the song called in the Daybreakers trailer? It's a pretty cool remix.

I thought this was already the anti-twilight.

I thought 30 Days of Night was the ultimate Anti-Twilight... Don't get any more anti-lovey, sparkley, wordy vampires than murderous, non-English-speaking rampaging vampires, really.

Was it filmed in Australia? There is a lot of aussie actors in the cast

It looks good but a long wait

Ethan hawk, hmmmm trying to picture that. I havent seen a good vampire movie in a very long time.

I thought this was already the anti-twilight.

Abel Ferrara's 'The Addiction' must be the exact opposite!

'Twilight' itself is likely the odd-one-out amongst vampire movies, though.

Looks great. I always wanted to see a movie where the vampires 'won' only to realise there was no food left.

This is one of those films which I've been waiting so long for that I think I may have imagined it all along. Looks absolutly fantastic and you can't argue with a cast that good.

For those looking for a HD version just click the video to be redirected to youtube for the full HD effect which looks absolutly beautiful.

Here's another great Vampire film from Down Under.

dunno kept thinking of Blade when watching the trailer, maybe its because Ethan Hawk reminds me of Stephen Dorf! Will wait and see hopefully we'll all be presently surpirsed!

I actually taught it was Dorf when he first appeared :o

Only thing about that trailer is that's 100% obvious who the bad guy is in all this & what his intentions are

vampires/serious firework/actions - nothing really outstanding but i decided to watch it in cinema purely for Ethan Hawke and we haven't got a proper vampire movie for a long time now!!:D plus sam and willem are in it too!!

    that trailer is awesome too

p/s:yes,i downloaded Twilight ,watched it for 10mins and shift+delete the file

Saw the trailer for this before Harry Brown, looks alright, even if vampires are no longer cool thanks to Twilight, plus that Placebo track sounds brilliant on it:

Ah so it was, quick question though whats the ruling on "zombie" threads in here, cos I've been given infractions for posting in threads that havent had posts in over a month on them in other forums, yet the last one on the previous daybreakers thread was nearly 6 months back so I figured start a new one

I like the look of this. A vampire film not designed for 15 year old girls can only be a good thing. It also looks like an interesting take on the genre, and might show some people how vampires are supposed to be portrayed (THEY DONT SPARKLE IN SUNLIGHT!!).

    Necroing
Action to dig up a dead thread in a forum.

Necro'ing threads is ok, as long as you have something relevant to say, iirc. Just dont necro a 5 year old thread with something like with a "Ya, i agree", "+1", or "Your ma!".

According to the film forum Charter:
    DRAGGING UP/BUMPING OLD THREADS
As a rule of thumb, if a thread is more than a year old, or the last reply is more than a year old, then it's advisable to either contribute to an ongoing thread, or start a new one.

In this case, Daybreakers has not yet been released so I'll mege the older thread with the new one (some of you may have noticed me do this with the likes of Avatar and the Expendables), for simplicities sake, ie: people wont have to restate themselves.

IMDb doesn't have a release date for the UK, but I'd say late February / early March.

I want to look forward to this but think it's too good to be true.
Getting flashbacks to 30 Days of Night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,342 ✭✭✭✭That_Guy

I'm a bit cautious of getting overly excited about this. The trailer looks great and looks to be a decent cast but it could go so horribly wrong.

The vampire genre really needs a good kick in the hole to get back on track and this has all the potential to be that much needed boost.

I'll see it with no high expectations.

What was wrong with 30 Days of Night? I thought it was one of the better vampire movies of recent times, I want my vampires to be vicious, non-english speaking demonic monsters, not GAP models with a crush on a permafrowned teenager :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,673 ✭✭✭✭senordingdong

30 Days Of Night had fantastic vampires, don't get me wrong.
    But the film was awful.

And all the best bits were shown in the trailer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,788 ✭✭✭✭krudler

Bumping this as I saw it earlier tonight, was decent, nothing amazing, just a solid vampire movie, nice take on the genre too , Ethan Hawke is good in it, Dafoe and Sam Neill are dependable as always, really decent effects on the vampires too, why couldnt I Am Legend have forgone crappy cgi in place of decent old school prosthetics?

    Would give it 3 stars

Movie looks good, defo cant wait to see it. Although most "new things" eg books movies shows, are all becoming obsessed with the whole Vampire theme. Although most of these are good, its kind of getting a bit old and boring. Hopefully Daybreakers will not follow and become another weak crappy film with blood sex and violence. :D

Blood and violence its got in spades, the trailers are selling it as a Matrix style action movie though which it really isnt, theres like three action scenes in it and they're not very long, its more of a thriller than an action movie

Had planned on seeing it tonight, but cineworld has shut its doors this evening for some reason :(

saw it last nite actually :) this is a highly anticipated one!didnt disappoint me but i thought the ending could have done better - abit old school lol

overall is a good movie :) but nothing really outstanding.love the world setting tho, white black red, beautifully classy!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,535 ✭✭✭Raekwon

Saw this lastnight and while I enjoyed it in parts, overall I wasn't blown away by it even though I admit it was a really good concept for a movie.

It was actually like a cross between John Carpenter's "Vampires" & Minority Report but had the overall feel of a TV movie (even with the decent cast).

Worth watching but don't get your hopes up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,163 ✭✭✭✭danniemcq

yeah i was hugely disappointed by this i thought the ending was weak and
the cure was pathetic. And if at the end when the marines are eating eachother and curing each other at the same time there would have been more than the 6 that the other lad shot

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,014 ✭✭✭Eirebear

Went to see it last night, and i have to say i was very disapointed by it.

The concept is fantastic, and in fact i reckon there is maybe 2 or 3 really good stories in there. But thats the problem, it tried to do way too much.

I suspect the planning meeting went something like this

"We've got a great idea for a film here."
    "But theres no script"
"Doesnt matter, lets just shoot as we go and see what happens!"
    "Cool, have some money"

And this really showed at the end, it just completely ran out of steam, as if written by people who didnt really know where they wanted it to go.

Its a shame because it had some smart moments, the city setting was great. The Paul verhoeven style adverts and billboards where a nice touch...but ultimately it never delivered.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 213 ✭✭emrys

i echo the other posts - first hour was good but hugely disappointing in the end. It looks like they made a movie without a (finished) script.
