There was a huge thread about this and a patch was released for Ireland but I am still very unsure about what it can and can't do for the regular Irish resident.

    what channels you get

RTÉ One, Two, TV3, TG4, Radio 1, 2FM, Lyric FM, RnaG and a RTÉNL test card. Remember it is only a test and it is also not available across the whole country.

See here for more info on DTT in Ireland.

Theres a thread here in which the OP talks about playTv costing £180 a year in electricity cost for regular usage. Havent read the whole thread myself, but thats probably excessive.

But still, the ps3 uses 100 to 180W while watching playTv, so i guess the associated costs over a year should be a consideration when buying.

Sounds like he might be confusing kW with kW/hr.

The PS3, if using 180W, would consume 1 kW/hr every 5.5 hours. I think the going rate is about 15c, let's just say for the sake of argument it is as high as 20c per kW/hr.

Watching TV for a fairly generous 8 hours of TV a day (per household - US average from Nielsen ratings), every day of the year:

So that means that the PS3 consumes 1.45 kW/hr a day, 530.91 kW/hr a year for a grand total of 106 euro a year. Pretty high, but nowhere near the 180 pounds he is coming up with.

The PS3 does seem to average about 180W in movie playback and gaming anyway. I mgiht have to stop using it as a DVD player, it's a total power hog.

Anyone seen these recently in stores and noticed the price? Was thinking of getting one this week.

Is there much improvement in picture and sound quality over analogue tv? I'm tempted to get play tv but I don't rally want to have to keep my ps3 on just to watch tv unless there is a noticeable improvement in quality.

Widescreen is the huge advantage for me. Also the EPG is very handy.

Definite improvement especially if you dont have a decent analogue reception. Plus the ability to record to the PS3 hard drive is a bonus. More details here.
