Another (possibly stupid) NTL question

    Hi,
So after a lot of tinkering i got my ntl pace box working with vmc using scart to composite with mixed success. Now my ntl box has suddenly died, so i reverted to plugging the cable directly into the tv, which raised the question.. if i can go direct to the tv by passing the decoder and pick up up the basic channels (the only ones i watch anyway) then cant i plug the cable directly into the tv card and have vmc pick up the basic channels that way?
Is there anything preventing me from doing this? and if not, what settings do i use to get vmc to detect the channels? cable or antenna? and pointers would be most appreciated.....

Yes it is possible to plug the coax cable directly into the tv tuner in your PC.

To setup the tv signal in VMC do the following:
    1. Select your region (e.g. Dublin), at this point the tv guide will be downloaded by VMC from the internet.
    2. Select cable.
    3. You will now be presented with a list (e.g. Chorus Analogue, etc), select NTL Analogue. VMC will now scan for channels and then save them automatically.

Now your finished. If you wish you may also save the channels in your preferred order.

I thought they were all encoded.

No only the digital channels are encrypted. The analogue ones arent.

I think even some of the digital channels are unencrypted these days. You can pick up one of the RTEs without a card, just the box is needed.

I don't think theres any plan behind NTL's encrption, which channels etc. Seems to be a random. Just the same as how they order channels.
