Amalfi Coast & Pompeii advice please

We're going to a wedding in Maiori next month and need some advice.

We're flying into Rome, spending a few days, then going by rail to Salerno.

After a few days in Maiori we fly home from Naples.

Question 1. The train from Rome to Salerno appears to pass close to Pompeii. If we take an early train can we break the journey at Pompeii, see the sights and continue to Salerno, with enough time to get a bus to Maiori all in the one day?.
Should we buy the tickets online now?

Question 2. Advice on getting from Salerno to Maiori, bus or taxi, probably late evening if we've done Pompeii.

Question 3. Advice on getting from Maiori to Naples Airport. Flight time is 9pm on Saturday so we'll have plenty of time, apart from the fact that the wedding is on Friday so little sleep and sore heads.

    Thanks in advance.

I can sort of answer Question 1 anyway.
I was at Pompeii earlier in the year (get off at Pompeii Scavi station) and I spent the whole day there. You mightn't get to see it properly, but if you have no intention of going back, going in for an hour at least is better than nothing. Just make sure you see the Amphiteatre! There's a lot of travel, I went from Amalfi to Pompeii and back in 1 day and that was travelling about 2.5 hours each way. Haven't been to Salerno or Maiori, but looks like a short enough trip on bus, maybe 25 minutes/half an hour. I did Amalfi-Sorrento enough times! Buses go right along the coast. I reckon you could easily do it, but just try and find out when the last bus leaves Salerno to Maiori, and get the train times before you leave the station so you won't be hanging around the station. Sometimes the last bus/train can be earlier than you think, and the bus drivers are the most unhelpful ignorant feckers I've ever met! Actually, that wasn't much help.

I can only tell you about Pompeii as we were in Sorrento and Positano. We were in none of the other places you mention.

Pompeii is an expansive site. You will be sick to death of walking after a while. It was around 38degrees when we were there and it really knocked us for six.

Get a Guide or Guide book earphones or at least buy a map. Being a sceptic I said "ah sure its only a money racket, how will we get lost?"

    YOU WILL!!!

Its absolutely massive and the good sights like the molten lava bodies and the colloseum are hard to find unless you try really hard.

It is a nice place because you can easily find a villa there is nobody in and soak in the history.

My OH did not appreciate the history at all so all it was to her was a building site unfinished.

    Thanks for the info guys.

Berty, I love the unfinished building site description. I hope we get to see it but I think my OH might be of the same mind as yours.
