howdy all, ive recently started doing weights in the gym and am looking for some advice on what the best protein shake type would be for me,i dont know much about all this as its new to me but as i am trying to lose weight aswell as build muscle i dont want to put on any more weight and have been told that these protein shakes make you put weight on,is this true? i do eat foods with protein and i do check how much protein is in everything i eat but im not getting enough protein out of what i eat coz ive been told i need 200g of protein a day for my size but i dont want to over eat as that just defeats the purpose.

    any advice would be welcome!!!

Just wanna point out that you shouldnt worry about putting on Weight- lean tissue is heavier than fat so by lifting weights you could end up weighing more even though your waist will be smaller and you'll have less fat. This is a good thing- you wanna look good in a mirror not on a scales

in fairness, if you're new to all this stuff, its very easy to have misconceptions about protein shakes and the like, so lay off the poor chap. We all start have to start somewhere.

OP - there are many types of protein shakes. Mass gainers are the ones you likley heard off, which are, funny enough, designed to make you gain weight/mass. You should stay away frfom same unless you are specifically looking to pile on the pounds.

You can get ordinary whey protein shakes, which are more or less pure protein (derived from milk). The won't make you gain "fat" on their own, although will help you add on muscle. That said, like any other food stuff, take in too much of it and your body will store it as fat.

i am trying to lose weight aswell as build muscle i dont want to put on any more weight

When you put on muscle you will gain weight as muscle is heavy, the muscle you put on will burn fat itself. You may actually gain weight but will be in better shape, you will shrink the waist.
If your looking to gain muscle don't bother with the scales, judge your progress with your eyes.

Protein such as whey will not cause you to gain weight but will improve muscle gains as it's most likely your not getting enough in your diet. When your buying buy it from a supplement store rather than a health store cause health stores sell ****. Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey would probably be a good choice for you

Shhhh! Keep it down will you, some of us are trying to inflate egos here you know.

OP, if you're really concerned about protein intake, you should post up your diet.

I said it once on another forum and I'll happily say it again here, if you're going to be wondering if protein shakes are safe or not, it means you haven't even done the slightest bit of research so why bother taking it? I thought the general consesus around here particularly (as it's an intelligent forum overall) was that people should get their diet sorted first before buying supplements.

Most people who take protein shakes have a bad diet to begin with and think by compensating it with some shake that all their fitness issues will go away which is wrong.

If the OP just referred to the thread which was pointed out to him in the beginning, afterall it is stickied, so he really should have noticed it. A lack of thinking and more of a knee jerk reaction if you ask me. And Roper, I don't have an ego when it comes to fitness as I'm not an expert - but I probably have an ego for most other things yeah. :)

1g of protein per 1.5lb bodyweight a day, is the general rule of thumb. From different sources eg chicken, tuna are the obvious ones.

The protein shakes that make you put on weight are mass/weight gainers.

Get either a whey protein isolate or blend. [Eg Dymatize Elite Whey(Isolate), or Gaspari Myofusion(Blend)] If you wanna know sites where to get supplements, PM me and ill send you some links. Is money an issue?

Since your only starting youll see gains fast. Make sure to have a good diet aswell and use good form/technique in the gym and get a good nights rest.

    Good luck.

But the OP came here to do the research. He just asked a question. The myth that protein shakes are harmful isn't going to be dispelled if someone asks about them and they get told to "Get out NOOB!".

That's not a valid point, I never told anyone to get out "noob". I said if you are asking about protein shakes being safe, you have a good bit to go before you need to start wondering whether or not you should take additional protein supplements or not.

I still stand by my other point that most people have a bad diet to begin with and should avoid shakes until they eat clean, again, all can be found in the stickies and can give even the most experienced gym head (good diet included) some valuable tips to make their road to good health even better, it's a beautiful resource of essential information.

He asked a simple question. Why do people give negative responses. Just because this isnt being conducted face to face doesnt mean you can be rude.

Hey OP, I'm no expert on weightlifting but I did work out vigorously a few years ago.

I worked out 6 days out of 7 (taking a rest day is very important, it will speed up the muscle definition process). I think since you will be doing intense weight training however, that you should do one day intense weights, one day aerobic excercise. Oh and the most important part of working your muscles is stretching them before and after. That is the key part.

I know you didnt ask for a workout routine! So - about the protein powder etc. You can get protein powder milkshakes (delicious). Unfortunately ...Im not sure what type of protein they are.

Here at home I have Whey Protein powder. And Spirulina Pacifica Protein powder.

From looking at the ingredients, Spirulina has more protein per carb

and also spirulina has been grown without herbicides and pesticides and only has one ingredient - spirulina powder. The whey powder has a lot of other ingredients.

My advice - take a look in your local health food shop for protein powder instead of intense sport nutrition shops. The health food shop will have the healthier options.

And he got a simple answer. The first reply pointed him to the stickies. I'd have said the exact same thing I typed face to face as there is nothing wrong with what I said. I'm not a coward behind a keyboard. The op should post up his diet and get it sorted but the stickies are there for a reason and they should be used.

Im presuming you get man made supplements from intense sport shops? Yes they work faster . Steroids work well too if thats what you want.

But Im talking about the safe ones. Health food shops sell organic products. Spirulina will not have an ill effect on the taker.

What is your definition of these "****e" supplements in the health food shops.

maximuscle, cant remember which one, i think it was the creatine that was effecting me though because i went on to whey protein and i was fine, i know plenty of others who use it but did not have my problems though

man made supplements from intense sport shops? Steroids? Why steroids? Why bring that up? What the hell is your definition of safe? Do you like copious amount of sugar in your over priced protein? DID YOU READ THE STICKIES? Because you badly need to, you're totally misinformed and are out of touch with the realms of reality.

You don't have a clue what you are talking about. Not a single notion.

Yeah no wonder you had trouble with that one. The ingredients aren't even real!

I think what The Entrepreneur was getting at is that protein from powder is the same as protein from food and it isnt the protein shakes that gave you "heart pains"

Ammm ok. Take a breather please. On my Whey protein there is 1g of sugar to 16g of protein. Is that a copious amount in your opinion?

Also - Out out touch with the "realms of reality". Overexaggerating a tiny bit there.

There is nothing unsafe about whey, it is natural, it comes from milk. Health food shops also sell whey (it's of a lesser standard from what i've seen though)

The only issue with a high protein diet is thats it harder on the Liver as far as im aware but that bacteria supplement you take will have the same issue. Just because something is natural does not mean it's better for you by the way

I wouldn't buy Maximusle, you might be surprised to know that it's one of the only major supplements sold by "health stores"

Not at all. I honest to god think you're from another planet; kind of like Superman but no way near as cool. You're like a bad version of ET.

It's midnight in NZ right now and I've plenty of time to talk this out. Not joking, I think you have lost the plot and here is why; man made supplements from intense sport shops? What does that even mean? What is your definition of safe?

Yeah I guess I was being a little bit sensationalist!

Also about the health food shops, jeez I didnt know they sold Maxi Muscle. Thanks for pointing that out! I dont understand how "Health" food shops would promote the use of that product.

Let me tell you why; it's a business and they have to make money. If they want a piece of the pie, they are only supplying to the demand otherwise they wouldn't sell it, it's called selling out really although I support it, it's business - I don't want maximuscle crap. No thank you. There are plenty of young lads (I sound like an old lad and I'm only 24) who love maximuscle because of the endorsements and celebs that have advertised it.

Please explain the points I raised in my other post.

Well then I'd hate to be an expert in fitness and nutrition because this place would really drive me insane. No, I'm not an expert but when people start going on about "man made supplements" and then comparing protein shakes from Maximuscle to Steroids, it annoys me because it's that same sensationalist attitude and over the top reaction that the media thrive on, Irish people love to jump on that ship and make a meal out of most things they don't understand. It's ignorance really and a complete lack of thinking. People should question more of what they read, not be so quick to be negative and just let things run through their head a couple of times before they make ridiculous statements i.e. common sense is what's missing !!!

OP, have a read of the Sticky as you've been advised. You may also want to do a review of your diet too as that's your #1 tool for improving your physique.

    G'luck.
