Using an external monitor for higher resolution

    Hey,
The max resolution on my Dell xps m1330 is 1280x800. This isn't great for what I need, so I'm looking to get an external monitor. I'm probably going to be able to get my hands on a free or cheap 22" Philips flatscreen, but I'm wondering if the display will still be restricted to the resolution of the laptop or can I use the full space the new monitor will allow?

    Thanks for any help!
