if you are working as a consultant and you cant find work, can you claim the dole or are you technically self employed?
I am in a position at the moment where I left go from my job a few weeks ago, I was on the dole for 2 weeks and then a contact of mine asked me to come in to do some work for him i have signed off the dole, he is trying to get me a full time position with the company but said at the moment will pay me consultancy wages and he hopes to have me in the payroll and a contract for full time employment signed by end of july. I'm just afraid that there'll be some obstacle in the way of making me a full time employee and if that happens and I have to sign back on the dole am I considered self employed for the month or what?? any advise please

Your best bit is to ask them yourself
Not 100% on sole trader stuff

There is a big delay when going from self employed to seeking the dole. I think it's 8 weeks or something, where you get nothing.

Given you are not on the payroll, have you registered as self employed with regard to the consultancy work??

If you haven't, I wouldn't, until you know where you stand with regard to your current employment. If you are going to get a paye job, everything is hunky dory, if they want to keep you as a consultant you can register as self employed.

And if they have no job/work for you, it will be easier to go back ont he dole.

Check out the short term enterprise allowance which allow you to work as self employed and keep your SW for a year.
