I'm looking for recommendations for a new show to get into.

I thought The Wire was absolutely spot on. I also love The Sopranos, and to a lesser extent The West Wing.

I've watched all of The Corner and Generation Kill already so count those out.

Wondering if there's anyone there with similar tastes who can point me in the direction of the next big thing??

The Shield. Not exactly like the Wire in terms of format or things it deals with. But its a brilliant show and well worth watching.

Maybe check out Deadwood, its set in the wild west and is another HBO series.

I have started on Generation Kill but it is quite slow to start.

The Wire was too I suppose.

The actor who played Ziggy Sobotka is in it.

Just finished Band of Brothers, thought it was excellent.

    Some good suggestions above.
Also check out Breaking Bad which is another show that has a real-life feel to it albeit with some added humour.

I'm getting seasons 2 and 3 next week having watched the first season over Christmas along with the The Wire. The script writing is immense and that even doesn't come close to Ian MacShane's performance. What a fckn actor that man is. Acres of screen presence. Great show. Definitely recommend it!

Great show, but it was cancelled and doesn't have a proper ending which is very annoying with any tv show, happened with Carnivale as well.HBO aren't as reliable as they used to be,even if they did give the Wire all 5 seasons, but it was a cheap enough show to make.

It's not HBO's fault, it's the fcking casual viewer. :pac:

I'm in a similar position having finished Season 5 on Sunday night. Already been through Sopranos, West Wing, Band of Brothers & Shameless, and have been advised to try Oz. It's a prison drama that runs to 5 or 6 seasons. Has anyone seen it yet ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 175 ✭✭Ozziej

Oz is brilliant. Best show I'd ever seen until Wire arrived. First few episodes show you what really would have happened to Andy dufrene (See beecher) in the shawshank.

    Thanks, will have a look.

So sad, just finished the final episode of the Wire also :( In the same boat now, looking to fill the void left in my life :D

Saw the west wing, sopranos, shield, entourage.....

It's between 24, Deadwood and Oz for me now I reckon. Which would people recommend?

Definatly OZ,then Deadwood, and perhaps the first season of 24,after that season 5 is the only good season, the rest are very average.

You mentioned some HBO shows there,Oz is HBO but also you should check out Carnivale and True Blood.

    Deadwood is fantastic.

Deadwood is great -at first- but doesn't have the courage of its convictions. It dissolves into an almost family melodrama by the end of S1. I'm sure things pick up & down again, but overall I couldn't take the schmaltzy "we're all a family really" feeling they were pushing hard to put across.

In my opinion the best series ever is
    1. The Wire
    2. Sopranos
    3. Rome

Only 2 seasons for Rome, but boy some excellent stuff there. It's a pity they were stopped after that, but for anyone interested I suppose a lot of what would come in subsequent serieses was done in I, Claudius.
...I watched I, Claudius again recently after Rome S2 and have to admit it seemed a lot drier and slower than I remembered -especially coming after Rome.

Oh and I almost forgot to mention Damages.
It's around 80% excellent/ 20% crap. Well worth it, even if it does feel like executives are passing too many "dumb it down" notes to the top-class team of writers.
Two seasons to date. I believe there's another on the way, although I doubt they'll manage to pull off another good one somehow. Well worth a look though (and I never liked Glenn Close).

I'm actually watching Deadwood at the moment ! On episode 8 at the moment, really enjoying it so far :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 504 ✭✭✭Loveless

Watched the last episode of The Wire last night and now have the same void, having started watching it at the end of May, but I can definitely see myself sitting down and watching it all again. :)

Gonna try Oz, Homicide and The Corner. Heard a lot of good things about Deadwood too. I heard about another programme called "Underbelly" that's based on real-life underworld figures in Australia in the 90's.

"Underbelly is a 13-part Australian television mini-series, retelling the real events of the 1995–2004 gangland war in Melbourne. The series is based on the book Leadbelly: Inside Australia's Underworld, by The Age journalists John Silvester and Andrew Rule. The series depicts the key players in Melbourne's criminal underworld, including the Carlton Crew and their rival, Carl Williams."

David Simon is working on a project set in New Orleans Post Katrina. What I know charachter who played Bunk will be in it. Has the potential to be a good show. Not sure when it airs though. Probably 2010 or 2011 I would think.

I think I read that Lester will be in it too

Also, Oz is fantastic. About halfway through Season 4 at the minute. Some great characters and scenes. A lot like The Wire, but definitely not for the faint of heart

thats right. This is the cast for show. Melissa Leo was on Homicide-Life on the street while Steve Zahn who some might remember from movie out of sight seems to playing the lead.
Read a book on Katrina so will be very interested to see how this series plays. Has potential to be good. Simon has a very good track record having been also involved in programme Homicide which for me was one of the most under-rated programmes of the nineties.

Ok having already seen oz, the sorpanos, and the wire, i am looking for something in a similar vein to those three to watch? i know people have mentione deadwood true blood etc but there not really the same kinda programme are they?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,316 ✭✭✭✭amacachi

Dunno if there is much "similar" to those, but Breaking Bad has been mentioned already and I can't recommend it enough.

how does the sopranos compare to the wire?is it as good?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,857 ✭✭✭✭Dave!

Yeah they'd be my top two shows that I've ever seen

    Both about on par IMO

Both must be watched, simple as :)

I'm on the final season of Oz at the moment, great show with brilliant characters for the most part. Few things bother me about it, some of the acting in particular is terrible. Cyril O'Reily, seriously? I think Kareem Said is overacted like crazy too, he should be on a stage not a TV show !

It's great spotting the Wire actors in it too :) Must have been about 8 or so with cameos etc! I'm just waiting for McNulty to come into it now, pleeeeeeeeeeaaasseee :p

Oh and there's an awful lot of cock in it isn't there? :pac: Not a complaint as such, but they do seem to make a point of showing you everyone's cock at least once :p

Well there not exactly the same, but its a toss up for me between the sopranos and the wire for best tv programme ive seen, if u like films such as the godfather, goodfellas, casin etc jut imagine them turned into a tv series and youve got the sopranos great show with great characters and storylines id recommend buying the boxset to so yeh can watch one str8 after the other cause you will get hooked on it.

And as for oz brilliant show too, but yeh the amount of homosexuality in at times could be a lil bit eh awkward to watch:pac:.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,720 ✭✭✭✭Penn

I don't know what it is about The Sopranos but I just can't get into it, not in the same way as I've done with The Wire and Oz. I just feel pretty much nothing towards any of the main characters. I've only watched to Season 3 though, so still only about halfway there.

Oz is brilliant though. Finished Season 4 there at the weekend. The homosexuality can be a little uncomfortable, as can the sheer level of violence, far more than in The Wire. But ultimately thats the point, thats prison life. Great show with some fantastic characters and storylines

i'll take a look at the sopranos.very hard to dumb-down to csi etc. after watching the wire.

Yes watched a bit of CSI. It seems like the David Caruso chap has the same facial expression no matter what. Good in NYPD blue but really he needs a new thing.

Just finished The Wire too, I've taken up reading history books again to try and fill the void! Currently reading Anthony Beevors "Berlin The Downfall: 1945". Immense read.

I think I'm going to watch The West Wing again, it will be good to see it again through older eyes. I never got into the Sopranos, watched a good bit of it but it isn't a patch on The Wire.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,857 ✭✭✭✭Dave!

Hah Kev, I just started rewatching the West Wing yesterday :) Watched the first 4 episodes already :D Forgot how funny it is, episode 1 is hilarious, I reckon anybody will be hooked straight away after that !

Tbh, if it hasn't drawn you in yet it's probably for you. I enjoyed it a lot at the time but looking back, The Wire is head and shoulders above every other tv show I've ever seen.

he over acts every scene he is in, those long pauses he uses are like he's after farting and he's standing there smelling it !!

He ruins what is actually not a bad show

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,082 ✭✭✭✭Spiritoftheseventies

What was Joey said in Friends about the fart acting. When actors forget their lines they pause as if they are holding it in.. helps them remember their lines apparently if they get stuck.

Same. Breaking Bad is the only show that fills that kind of void and that is on hiatus for a long while. WSOP is what I look forward to now, you never know what's gonna happen :)

IMHO It got much better when Jimmy Smits (?) took over from Caruso

Got to the end of Season 2, enjoying it quite a bit now. Need to acquire the rest unfortunately. I just think the trouble is that the storylines are a bit too quick in Season 1, it's like the basic plots were written by the same guys who write Home and Away. :P

Ok it's not a cop show but I'm surprised no one has mentioned Six Feet Under. Still the best show ever has far as I'm concerned - very closely followed by the wire. The character development and the actors are second to none. It's created by the same guy who did American Beauty so I suppose that will give you some idea. You'll recognise most of the characters in it either from what they went on to do next (Dexter, Dirty Sexy Money, Brothers and Sisters, The Office US) or as already being established actors (James Cromwell, Kathy Bates, Patricia Clarkson, Freddy Rodriguez). If you just want brilliant television and don't care whether it's a cop show or not then I'd recommend it.

Next up for me will be to watch the Sopranos properly (instead of an episode here, an episode there) and the West Wing. Think you can get the complete series for both of these for €60-70 at the moment.

Six Feet Under is very satisfying end to end.
