tax at the end of the month

I'm pretty sure the answer is yes but if I were to tax my car in the next few days will I end up paying for all of June (and losing 3 weeks as a result).

I only bought the car a few weeks ago and just had the log book transferred to me - it's been off the road since the purchase.

I know I need to get a Garda cert to say it's been off the road but even with that would I be better waiting until July 1st to tax it?

My understand is the tax goes from the start of the month to the end, regardless of when within the month you tax it...

Yes as you said, best tax it on the first of July.

    Re the "Garda Cert"

This is a form that you complete, stating that the car was off the road for the duration, its a declaration by you.

The Guard is only witnessing you signing the form.

Yes you would have to pay for June if the vehicle was in a public place.

RF100 is the form you looking for to declare off the road. As posted above you are signing the decleration and it is witnessed by a member so as to make it a statuory decleration (one that you could be prosecuted for if found to have used the vehicle)

Thanks for that and thanks for the clarification on the form - it has genuinely been off the road so I've no problem declaring that, especially if it saves me paying for June when I didn't use the thing.

In your case I don't think it matters whether you pay it now or next month. You will have to pay the road tax from the begining of the month on which you offically became the registered owner. If that was this month then you wait until July to pay your motor tax then you will also have to pay back dated motor tax for June.

This is of course unless you get the form signed by Gardai stating the vehicle was off the road up to July.

Yeah, I think I would without the form saying it was off the road.

The plan is to leave it off the road until next Wednesday and getting the form to say so.
