I play a bit of Hurling and want to improve fitness attributes to my game particularly speed of the mark, strength and endurance. I have the skill but want to have that extra bit of fitness. I train with the hurling team and push myself but think I need more just looking for some GAA opinions on this please?

Options I’ve used in the past for gaining fitness outside training with the team are , the old reliable jogging and swimming. For non-impact, spinning is great.
For the best results I’ve ever had on my own, integral training on a treadmill ( a min jog, 30secs or a min close to sprinting for 20mins upwards) or 10mins slow jog(10km/hour) then step it up 1km/hour every min until you sprint for a min (15 or 16km/hour.) Step it back down by 1km.hour every min. Once you reach 10 again you can go back up again or jog at 10 for the rest of it( 5 to 10 mins ).

Hope this is of some use.

Thanks Marse. I have a treadmill at home and some fields so will maybe give it that interval training a try. Was thinking of a bit of cycling on days I am not training with the nice evenings? any thoughts

do weights twice a week - big lifts. squats, deadlifts, bench press, pullup

followed by lots of short sprints - shuttle runs. maybe factor in resistance power training while running - using a shute or sledge. its all about power and strength

    enjoy

To tone up, use a lighter weight 3 sets of 12 to 15 reps, to build muscle use a heavier weight 3 set, of 10 reps

Just do 5-7 reps with a heavy weight. builds power and strength. go over to fitness forum and they'll sort you out straight

Heavier weights and lower reps builds muscle!!!

Curious guy, go to your gym and get a program from a trainer.

Who do you hurl with. I'm on the North side and am in a similar boat to you. If you wanted to join me road biking for stamina your welcome. I do about 60-100km a week. Best to time yourself and improve on it. Don't train for long cycles really. Hurling is all aout reaction so short cycles at speed are best I find and throw in an odd long cycle to prepare fro extra time in matches.
