Tuna & Protein in General

Just had my second ever tin of tuna chunks in brine. Honestly I detest it and can't see myself ever eating it again. What can I substitute instead? I don't like the protein-shakes either. Chicken is OK but pretty boring and fillet-steak is extremely expensive. Any ideas? I know my diet needs more protein so its important that I get this right. thanks

    Cottage Cheese - meh
Milk - love the stuff. drink about 2 pints a day of the low fat kind
Nuts - almonds whenever I can get them
Turkey - great idea, do I need to get fresh breasts/slices from butcher? is supermarket stuff just junk?
Fish - eat it at least 3 times a week. usually steamed monkfish or cod
    etc
    etc

    keep 'em coming

Why does it have to be fillet steak, what's wrong with other types? Also, eggs.

I eat 2 eggs a day (usually boiled). i find the chewyness factor of the other types of beef steaks to be off putting

that's to do with the way you cooked it not the meat it's self , puunding it will help , but you really need to look at your cooking temp + time

I eat sardine pate that you can buy in Portugal - is basically sardines and tomatoes (well, the one I buy) - the in-laws live there so when we visit we buy some or get the relatives to bring it home. It tastes really nice too.

    You don't like protein shakes?

    Me arse tbh.

Do you like smoothies? Yes you do, because everyone does, and if you don't then you're dead inside. So make a smoothie, use MILK not water, add some natural yogurt, some strawberrys, a banana, 2 scoops of whey (i use strawberry) and hey presto, a delicious smoothie with over 50g of protein.

Chicken is boring and steak is expensive? Sorry man, suck it up. Although I'm with you on the tuna! ;) Get creative, learn how to cook, chicken can be anything but boring if you put the effort in. Buy some lean mince, 500g for around a fiver, make some bolognese/burgers/whatever the hell you like, it's not expensive. Eat more eggs, poached eggs on toast with salt and black pepper = yum!!

try cooking your own tuna. should be able to pick up tuna steaks from aldi or lidl, cook for about half an hour in the oven let cool and throw into salad.

no fishy taste off them at all so it makes it much easier to eat.

I can eat tuna in brine no problem but it's a lot easier if you have it with a nice glass of milk as well.

Jesus fillet only eh? Fair play to you. Bet you only drink Finlandia too. Striploin is one of those you may pick up on a butcher's special and it's nice and tender as well. Besides, you're a man, so you can pretend you're taking a lump off a t-rex and chew like a caveman.

As a steak lover with a household budget though I sympathise. I'll share a secret recipe with you for cheap and cheerful, non chewy beef.

2lbs of lean mince- don't get rib mince.
    tablespoon of flour
    pinch of salt and pepper
a teaspoon of curry powder (hot)
    4 spring onions, finely chopped

Mix most of the flour, the mince, onions, the curry powder and salt and pepper in a bowl. Don't be a wuss and use a spoon, you have to mash it in good style. Dust a plate with the rest of the flour. Roll the mince into tight balls and then flatten them into burger shapes. Roll them lightly in the flour, this will give them a nice texture on the outside. Get them on the barbecue. Eat with a baby spinach salad. Soon you will have giant muskles and many concubines who admire your culinary skill.

how does it have anything to do with my cooking ability when the fillet is succulent and the sirloin chewy? I'm either a good cook or a bad one, not both.

Stop complaining and just eat. If you want to grow, get over the simple, petty factor of taste, and just get it into you. Refine your palet as I and many many others have done. I used to be on the edge of puking up tuna when I began eating it. But I knew it was good for me. Same with cottage cheese. To say I enjoy them now is a bit much but I certainly have no problem getting them into me. Stop complaining and eat

its easy to make a fillet taste nice you gotta put a bit of effort into the other cuts like pounding as was mentioned

Yes, animals are your friend. I don't feel satisfied after a meal unless i know at least one has died as a result!

Eggs, beef, pork, chicken, lamb, turkey, tuna, salmon, kangaroo, ostrich, alpaca, emu.... the list is endless, but get them all into you!

Also, milk is good, although doesn't necessarily end in death.

Can you actually get kangaroo in Ireland?

Any easy way to make tuna less bland is to chop up an onion and mix together. Sweetcorn, quinoa, cottage cheese, red/green peppers are nice too.

All it takes is a bit more creativity and effort.

At the end of the day, nothing tastes worse than being skinny and weak!

I started eating tuna after being veggie for 20 years. I needed the protein and vegetable wasnt enough and I was eating too many eggs I reckoned.

The taste is ok as long as I DONT mix it with anything else, ie straight from the tin. The only other way I eat it is as fishcakes.

I havent tried the whey smoothie thing, always seemed to be for weightlifters rather than a numpty like me. ;)

If you wanted you could imagine little calves dying from starvation because their milk was taken away to feed us (although they don't actually starve, but anyways)....or the fresian bull calves that are killed cause they're worthless....

So long as the bit of extra fat isn't a major issue to you the tuna in oil is a lot better for you. IMO tastes a lot better too
