    A good old fashioned map.

    (Sorry, in joke, couldn't resist).

I would say Garmin 705, if you know how to use it (some people clearly do, some people dont - you know who you are).

The Garmin 705 is (AFAIK) the best combination gadget, but it's much less usable/useful than any half-decent car satnav. But you couldn't really use one of those on the bike.

Does the 705 talk to you in a matronly voice like the in-car Garmins?

Or in a high pitched Italian staccato?

Not sure what language it is, but it sounds like a series of beeps and bleeps to me... French maybe?

Beeps and bleeps, that'll be the child-friendly mode as she curses you out of it while 'recalculating'.

Google maps on my phone, even without GPS I find it great. That'if you need directions. I'm carry my phone in a plastic bag anyway, may as well make use of it.

    It doesn't talk, regrettably.

The biggest issue with 705 as a satnav is a lack of function to tell it "I disagree with your choice of route, I've been on this road for several miles, I am not going to do a u-turn, so please recompute the route based on the road I'm on now".

That's stoopid, the car ones recalculate automatically from what I've seen.

I'm just thinking out loud here, but I wonder if that is due to having it set for "cycling". Perhaps if it is set for "car" it might do different.

Lack of a via function is also annoying. Still the best option for the bike I reckon. Besides anything else many car units have very limited battery life as they expect to be plugged in to power most of the time.

.....or if you want the 'non euro' cheap option.....you could always put a Garmin Etrex Legend Cx in your back pocket, can generally pick these up second hand for about ton.:)
