    A quick question:

Serious or not so serious race? I really want to know would there be a load of punters like me running that are going to do the course no quicker than 33min or will there be a load of ultra fit athletes that will finish well under 20 min meaning that the finish line could be taken down by the time I'd be coming in!

Also, if there are showers I guess there must be changing facilities - would that be correct?

    WB Yeats,

I would imagine that there'll be a pretty even spread of runners from (sub?) 20 to 40 (plus!!). With the sun shining on a Friday evening, where else would you rather be?

    Roy McC,

The race hq is at the Jackie Skelly gym at the Charlesland track in Greystones. There are obviously changing facilities there, and as you say, access to the showers certainly implies access to the changing rooms.

Am not specifically picking on Kilcoole AC here, but the timing of this race (and other evening time summer races) puzzles me - why are they run so early in the evening?

For people who are working 9-5 type jobs and may have to travel a distance, these races are logistically impractical. Would personally like to have done this race, but race starting at 7pm means it's pretty much impossible when not finishing work before 5.30 in city centre.

Surely with road closures/traffic etc., is it not easier to start these races at 8pm? Still allows sufficient time for everyone to complete the course before darkness.

Would these races not get better turnout if run later in the evening?

(On a separate point - am also puzzled by the post-race BBQ (which is a nice touch, especially in this weather) being hosted in a venue that's 3k from start/finish).

How much is the race? Online entry is closed, so I can't tell. Thanks.

When I entered online it was 15 euros.

This should be a good challenge with some tricky hills in the first 3k & almost all downhill for the remainder.

Is 15 euros standard for this sort of race

I've just done a great race for the princely price of 7 euro. 15 squid strikes me as WAY steep.

You're spoiled at the imra races there SJ! From being involved in road races before, the costs tend to be higher, better prize money, t-shirts etc etc, wheather its good value or not, the clubs dont make a whole lot of money from them. And to be honest, Imra is one of the cheapest and most efficent organisations out there!

Yes, looking at the logistics I might just get there in time for the B-B-Q :(

I've mapped the course here: http://www.mapmyrun.com/view_route?r=270124588222582518

The peak is at the U-turn, from driving the course there seems to be a bit of a drag for a k from about 4.5 to 5.5 - but clicking on the elevation on the link above doesn't really show that. Either it's an optical illusion or the elevation on mapmyrun is not too accurate.

I'm looking forward to it all the same - I'm lucky I live 15mins from the course and can work from home on Friday :D.
Debateable as to whether it will be a fast one or not, seems to always be either up or down with a steep enough climb at 2k (for us non-hillys ;)).

Thanks. I've run this route or variations of it before and it doesn't fill be with great joy I have to say. That said I'd love to support a local event. On the other hand I'm between races having run last night and planning to run a tough hill race on Sunday, so a race on Friday wouldn't be a sensible thing to do. A pity.

Great race, the hills & humidity made things tricky. Well organised, nice tee, a bucket of Ballygowan & a banana at the finish line. I avoided the water stop as 6k without liquids is bearable. Missed the bbq too.

Ran this aswell - pity the k markers were all over the shop.
    4:01, 4:25, 3:38, 3:32, 2:57(I wish), 4:16 (22:49) - would be interested to see if anyone GPS'd it.

I was too busy concentrating on getting up hills to notice but my wife walked most of the course and said the markers were either moved by a prankster or planted by a blind person. Great time by the way.

Got a hold of the results this morning

This was a great fun race race, well organised and very friendly, plenty of marshalling, water, bananas, T-shirt and BBQ all for €15. It seemed there were much more fun runners then club runners so hopefully Kilcoole AC find some of them join up as this was a great advertisement for running.

My garmin tells me the course was 5.89km long and the km markers but it also has a level of error :)

    1.03k
    1.10k
    870m
    929m
    789m
    1.17k

Just want to comment all your appreciated feedback on the race.

    The distance:

This was approved by AAI as a 6km run, it was also measured by Wheel, Car and GPS system.

    The start time:

We realise it was early for alot of people to get to the location and we've concluded that the new start time will be later in order for accomadate people better. A 7:30pm start.

Thanks again for coming and hope to see you next year.

It's a decent club, with some good competitive runners, particularly around middle distances. Fionnuala Britton is one of their stand-out talents. They train a couple of weeks per night at the track at Greystones, and have some pretty strong coaches on board. Beyond that, you're better off contacting them directly: website.

    Oh wait.... What-now?

That Kilcoole AC 6km was a great race. Fionnulala Britton was on the registration desk. Fionnuala Britton! BBQ afterwards and even a prizegiving.
A great club, I see plenty of their runners out on Tuesdays and Thursdays giving it socks on the Spine Road in Charlesland. They also seem very friendly and welcoming any time I shuffled past in my loner mode:)

edit : Ehhh - Kilcoole is beside the sea and if the ice caps keep melting....

As a member of Kilcoole I couldn't recommend it enough, Maria MacC coaches there. It caters for athletes of all levels.
