    Hi All,

Im on vodafone at the minute with an un-locked 1st Gen iphone.
Im planning on changing to O2 to get the new iphone 3gs but i was wondering will I be able to (freely) connect to the wi-fi networks to check my emails at home and at work, airports, hotels etc without using up whatever 3g data allowance comes with the O2 bundle.

    Does this question make sense?

Also Im out of contract with vodafone, do I need to ring them to say im moving to O2 or will carphone warehouse do all this for me?

    Cheers

WiFi and 3G are completely separate.

So you will be able to use WiFi hotspots without it coming out of your data allowance.

However, some WiFi operators (such as in airports) do charge for the service, so you would have to pay for that separately. And, as an O2 customer, you get free WiFi in certain locations for a year (check their website for details).

Carephonewarehouse will sort out the porting over, no need to ring Vodafone.

    Hey,

I have a iphone 3G on Vodafone. The 3G and 3GS can access any free wi fi hot spots or networks like those in public libraries etc. It can also connect to wireless networks in your home. You just need to have the WEP or WPA wireless password for that network.

As part of your Vodafone contract you get access to all bizbuzz (i think thats the name of the company) wireless networks. Basically there are hundreds of locations around the country such as hotels, cafes, pubs etc that are part of this group. This means you get free wi fi access at all these places as part of your vodafone contract. There is a list of them on Vodafone.ie and you get a leaflet with all of them when you buy your iphone.

Other than that you will have to pay for wi fi in other locations. e.g. Airports

    Cheers Tom Dunne

I just wanted to be sure that when im in a wi-fi area and i press the mail button or connect to internet that it will actually connect through the wi-fi and not through the 3g network.
Do i need to disable the 3g on the phone or what?

Last thing i want is to get a huge bill for data when I have more than enough wi-fi spots around me wherever I am

    Thanks again

I think you have mixed up Vodafone with O2 in the above.

So if you are using wi-fi and not 3g abroad, does that mean there would be no charge at all? Or would roaming charges still apply?

You can't roam on a WiFi network. Roaming refers to the mobile phone network.

Some companies who provide WiFi services may charge for it, but that is totally separate from the mobile phone network.

If you unlock your iphone and use a different network other than o2 can you still avail of the free bitbuzz wifi for the year?
