Employment prospects for an Australian on a Working Holiday Visa

    Hi

I'm based in London and have been for a number of years so I'm out of the loop when it comes to the employment situation in Dublin, other then knowing the general state of the world economy of course.

My girlfriend is an Ozzie who has done the British working holiday thing and is no longer entitled to work here. She is currently in Australia and the only way we can think of being closer together is for her to move to Ireland on a holiday visa. It's not an ideal solution but its whole lot better then being 24 hours apart.

I have my reservations about the move given what I know about the current state of affairs, which isnt much. So I am looking for opinions and advice on what her prospects would be. She is college educated but its an arts degree and she openly admits that it wasnt not worth the paper it was written on 5 years ago much less now. She has office administrative experience only. She would be looking for something reasonably well paid so she could come to London on a regular basis.

Would it be foolhardy for her to move to Dublin at this time? She has a job at home but its only a stop gap at the moment while we consider our options.

    Yes.

A WHV only buys you one year, and she's likely to be unemployed for at least some of that. My impression is that people who "aren't foreign enough" (ie are likely to expect to get minimum wage) are having real difficulty getting jobs.

You need to think up a proper solution, not waste time/money on interim ones.

Sorry to sound so harsh about it, but that's what I think. YMMV.

Would you consider moving over there?
If you have lived together for the previous 12 months (and can prove it) you may be able to apply for a Spouse 309/100 visa. It's intially a 2 year temporary visa and you can apply for permanent residency after 2 years. You apply for it offshore, by post, to London.
It takes approximately 3 months processing time and entitles you to live and work freely in Australia.

I wouldnt fancy her chances of getting office work in Dublin, absolutely nothing going anywhere..
