    Hi,

I have been on maternity Benefit for awhile and will be Meeting my boss in the next few weeks to discuss where I stand (As my maternity benefit ends soon).

I know that the company I work for are in trouble and expect some changes. To be honest I would love to be a full time mother but me and my partner could not currently afford it. He is on roughly net 18000per annum and I am currently on 24000pa net.

I have been on the welfare.ie website and its all a little confusing. There is mention of :

    Fuel allowance
    Smokeless Fuel Allowance
    Medical Card
    Family Income Supplement
    Supplementary welfare allowance
    Mortgage Interest Supplement
    Jobseekers Benefit
    Jobseekers Allowance

I have read through them all and am Still a little confused.

Just wondering if somebody might help me out here -

    1) If I am made completeley redundant am I right in saying that I may be entitled to one of Jobseekers Benefit or Allowance.

    2) If my hours are reduced I may be entitled to FIS or Jobseekers Allowance/Benefit (but not both).

    3) My husband works full time but is on a low wage (highlighted above), does that mean we would DEFINANTLY not be entitled to any Mortgage Interest supplement? If so, can they potentially pay all your interest on your mortgage?

4)Do you think we would be entitled to a medical card and possibly the fuel allowance on our existing salarys?

    5) There is a time limit of 12 months on the Jobseekers benefit, do you revert to the Jobseekers allowance if you still cannot get a job?

    5) Assuming one partner is working, irrespective of that Income, at no stage will you be entitled to claim:

    - Mortgage Interest Supplement if one partner is working full time

    - Jobseekers Allowance/Benefit along with Family Income Supplement

    - Jobseekers Allowance/Benefit along with Supplementary Welfare Allowance

Thanks in advance for any help . .

I will only respond to the medical card question and leave the rest to those who are more knowledgeable :)

Info on medical card is here:

    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/health/entitlement-to-health-services/medical_card

Its hard to say whether you would qualify (with both of you earning) as there are various amounts allowable against your earnings for the purposes of applying for a medical card so giving your net earings is not really an indication. However, if you didn't qualify for a medical card you would probably qualify for a GP visit card. Its the same application form for both so they will automatically assess you for the medical card and, if you don't qualify, then for the GP visit card.

it all depends on your partners working hours, your prsi contributions etc.
i think your best bet is to go to citizens information and ask them/ get booklets and see what you're best bet is.
dont go into the social welfare office unsure, know exactly what you're entitled to before you go in and just fill out the forms. in general, they wont help you regarding you're queries to entitlement but once you know what you're looking for they're great!
good luck, hope you get on alright.
fuel allowance, rent allowance etc. are generally secondary benefits that come with primary benefits, so you'll need a main benefit to be entitled to those.

MABs are actually very good at letting you know what benefits to apply for as well :)
