Hi all i recently started using the yasmin pill a week ago so far had no problems at all healthwise so its great. However im just wondering is it effective straight away for a first time user. I had unprotected sex yesterday which would have been day 6 of taking the pill. It does say in the leaflet in the box that it is effective immediatly but does this apply to a first time user too? Hope that makes sense

Yep, you are protected from day 1.

The mix of hormones in the pill trick your body into thinking you are already pregnant so the follicles in your ovaries are not stimulated resulting in no ovulation.

So as long as you carry on taking them regularly every day as per directions you will be fine.

PS. Antibiotics inhibit the efficacy of the pill so if you take them you will need to use condoms till the end of that cycle.

Also if you throw up or have the runs, that also compromises the efficacy of the pill, again condoms till the end of that cycle.

Ah thats great thanks for putting my mind at rest i just wasnt sure if it applied to me because id never taken the pill before.....thanks again

  • Unless something has changed since I was on it, it's only effective immediately if you start on the first day of your period. If not, it's fully effective only 7 days after you start taking it. If it was not the first day of your period, I'm fairly sure you have a pregnancy risk.

^^ Thats true, but they usually tell you to take it from day one on your first cycle!

Hope that is the case OP??

OP If you're still concerned a trip to your pharmacist should ease your worries.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
