Banks are usually pretty good outlet as far as loans go. Also your local credit union. Try and look for the best available rate - Tesco are pretty good

    Have you tried MABS ( http://mabs.ie/ )?

They won't give you a loan, but I understand they can help you to negotiate with your debtors and make alternative arrangements which you can afford. They are supposedly very busy in the current climate though.

Thanks alot never thought of tesco.

Credit union you have to be a member 16 weeks. And then you can only take out equivalent of what you have there first time.so your still choking on what you owe out and paying them back.

Thanks i have been to them already and it didn't help,I am tired of getting threatening letter in door.I don't even see how of my bills are as high like gas.I don't even have it on except one hour day.
I am resorting to the loan sharks now even if not smart at least till i get a job it will keep the bills off my back.
I will try tesco though now to.

Yeah i had them before,I am not crazy about them. Thanks,You are kind of not really getting anything clear with them and then you are paying them back and bills still choking you.

Providence loans charge 180% interest. If you borrow from them you will be borrowing for life!

Perhaps you can start by cutting your broadband bill!

If it is ESB nad Gas, check that your bills are not being estimated.

If the last time a reading was done was in winter, then they could be using the winter amounts to do their estimates.

    Give them a ring.

If you dont need your car, then it would be much better to sell that to pay off your debts rather than taking out a loan at extortionate rates.

Id call out the ESB and Gas people to get your meter read
Check and see how many plugs you have in
Do you use your emersion often?

Think about switching from ESB to bord gais to save money

If you find the bills are constantly mounting up, look at what you are spending your money on. As a loan would not help if you are consistanly overspending on certain areas. Its not necessarily on going out it could be car/house insurance or NTL bill. These are the things that add up. Shop around for better quotes. It will be worth it in the end

I really do need my car to get around,But if it comes down to it i am going to have to give it up.
The loan is the only option i can think of,as i am looking for a job and with threats of cutting me off i would rather be owing a loan then have no gas or ESB.

I dont have plugs in at all unless using them,I always turn off the mains of everything in the house and cook only twice a day.
I pay my bills weekly and food,Not a single other thing is it going out on.I dont know i guess i have to go back to drawing board again. If after you pay your bills and you cant even afford a full week shop there is something not right.P.s thanks the idea about changing over to board gais is a good idea so one bill for both.
I am on 235 a week how would you budget that out? Any advice appreciated thanks.

Could you negoiate your rent? Or have you mortgage?
If mortgage nothing really can be done on that front
But cutting out non essentials and trying to find additonal ways to cut corners. Ask about family if they need some extra work done, even cleaner or babysitter at weekends. When you are strapped every penny counts

Yeah rent but no negotiating on that either i am afraid.
I will try thanks for listening.Unfortunately my family arent around for me i am on my own with everything.
I have been searching for baby sitting jobs and cleaning jobs. But so far nothing.I am not pretending i am only one out there i know there is worse off than me but still very stressful when they threaten to cut you off and you cant get ahead of them.Christmas bills definitely did it to me i think i never could get back on top of them after Christmas and with losing my job to.I feel like letting them cut me off gas wise and just keep ESB for now.

Not sure if ESB offers this, but Bord Gais offer customers the option of paying a set amount every month into their account, so that you aren't hit with massive bills in the winter and then have low bills in the summer. Going forward you should look into this as it is much easier to manage & budget for a set amount each month instead of getting huge bills for the winter months. I find it really helpful.

OP, are you on social welfare? If you are, I've heard that you can go down to the community welfare officer with the ESB (and maybe BordGais too) letters that threaten to cut you off. They can pay the bill, at their discretion.

If that's not an option, a friend of mine had a big ESB bill she couldn't pay and was getting cut-off notices. She switched to AirTricity and ESB cleared the account. This may just be a mistake, and ESB will realise it and come after her for the final payment, but so far she's had several weeks without any threats. At the very least it's given her some breathing space.

Don't get a loan if you can possibly avoid it. Good luck

Yeah unfortunately i am since Christmas.I used to think they got money for nothing and were living good with their benefits but now,I don't know anybody lives on what they are getting.I had heard that rumour to.I didn't go down because i was told that is not real and only is Chinese whispers.

Thanks alot for your advice and for the good luck much appreciated.:)

I would try the community welfare officer - they may not help but they might.

You can also apply for rent allowance there, although your rent will have to be under the threshold.

I'm so sorry to hear that things are so bad for you at the moment! First thing to say (and I realise that it's easy to say) is try to look at it in perspective, either the bills will get paid or they won't, life will go on after you get through this so try not to let it eat away at you, it will only effect your peace of mind.

It seems that you have already tried a lot of options and I imagine that the banks aren't willing to negotiate anything with you being as how you are only living on a Social Welfare Payment. Budgeting your cash going forward is something you obviously need to work on, and I'm guessing that you already know that. Is it just utility bills that you have at the moment that are getting you down. I'm wondering if your landlord may be able to help as ultimately the bills will go down against his address, you could always move on and leave them behind. Would he be understanding enough to approach? Perhaps he would be willing to pay them and you could pay him and extra 20 quid or something a week, (or if s/he has other rental properties perhaps you could work it off doing odd jobs, painting etc?) you could also discuss installing pay-as-you-go meters in the property.

When were you let go from your job, have you contacted your local tax office to see if you are entitled to any tax rebate being as how you were out of work for some months. Just thought that you might not know that you are entitled to a refund, for example if you only worked 7 months out of 12 in a tax year, as your tax credits are calculated over a 12 month period you would be entitled to something back for the 5 months that you didn't actually work. Also have you checked that you were claiming all the tax credits that you were entitled to when you were working, e.g. for rent, wheelie bins, union etc, as if you weren't you might be able to get them backdated and get a little more money back for that.

Have you tried contacting the companies that are sending you threatning letters? They can't do anything to help unless you contact them. They might be willing to come to some sort of payment schedule with you.

What are your plans going forward? Obviously you've been looking for work and there's nothing there. Do you know that if you decide to make use of the time you are unemployed by going back to retrain that you can get a back to education grant and in a lot of cases this is paid in addition to the social welfare payments that you are already receiving?

Hopefully I'm not taking too simplistic view of your problems and that you might find a suggestion here that will help. I've never dealt with a loan shark but if Providence are charging 180% interest as another person has pointed out then can you imagine what they are charging. If you do decide to sell your car don't forget to keep the tax and insurance discs and send them back for a refund also.

Best of Luck with this, I hope everything works out ok!
    F

Hi - can you please give an idea on what amounts you owe on the gas and ESB? And also, roughly how much they are every 2 months? Are you living on 235 after rent or does that include rent?

I lived in a 5 bed house and my ESB was €90 every 2 months and gas was also about €90.

One thing I wasnt aware of the first time I move out of home was that washing and drying machine (especially the drying machine) are the worst culprits. If you put on a wash, HANG clothes on a clothes horse. The difference I saw in bills was phenomenal. Also, why are you using gas every night for an hour? Is it to heat the water? Do you have a shower with an immersion?

Last note, do not get a loan to pay off your utility bills. As long as you keep chipping away at them, youll be ok-we can help you work out a budget but you need to post the figures.
