iPod touch - new upgrade to OS3

The new upgrade to OS3, amongst other things, will allow blue-tooth functionality for iPod touch 2nd generation users. So we can cut the cord to our stereo systems.

I wonder though, will this allow us full VOIP functionality? Will this capability support blue-tooth headsets or wireless headphones with integrated microphones?

    Anyone know the answer?

Ah - I've been wondering exactly the same thing!

That would be my main reason for upgrading.

    Does it not already?

My 1st Gen iPhone on 2.1 supported Bluetooth headsets. The new standard introduced in 3.0 is the A2DP protocol - for streaming stereo sound to compatible equipment. It doesn't directly relate to headsets. Some devices may not have a microphone (e.g. home stereo, car stereo).

Does the iPod Touch even support Bluetooth? According to Apple, it doesn't.

I have an iPod touch and don't ever remember seeing any menus for bluetooth stuff. I could be mistaken though. Then again I have it constantly hooked up to my car stereo and so don't use it at all on it's own only for syncing new music to it every now and then. Having gotten an iPhone kind of negated the need for a separate mobile mp3 player.

Supposedly it will with OS 3.0. The hardware is there but for some reason hadn't been acknowledged by Apple until now. The Nike+ support was the only app which used the Bluetooth transceiver.

Since the iPod Touch doesn't have a microphone, Skype et al require headphones with integrated microphone afaik. Now, I like the headphones I have, so using my bluetooth headset would be a really tidy solution.

The Nike+ chip is actually bluetooth in disguise.

Ah, I see. So, despite the fact it doesn't have a microphone, it could be implemented via the Bluetooth stack.

    Very clever.

That'd be the plan anyway. From my reading of the upgrade from an iPod Touch POV, it looks like Bluetooth will become enabled for audio-out at least. I think I'm just going to have to cave and buy the upgrade. I'll report back next week (because I'm away from by BT headset until then).

The second gen iPod Touch has Bluetooth and 3.0 enables it.

VOIP can be used on the second gen touch with either 3.0 or 2.0. It supports those headphones with the mic built in to them, like the ones that come with the iPhone.

Do you know if Bluetooth is enabled to allow voice-in as well as audio-out?

It does on iPhone 3.0, so I don't see why it shouldn't work on the Touch. That being said, I can find nothing on Google about people doing this.

upgraded last night - nifty search capabilities make it a worthwhile update , though to be honest it would have been nice if this was included free in core in the first place.

stopped_clock - Will be interested to hear your feedback when you test this new bluetooth functionality with your headset..

Feels a little sluggish on the first generation iPod Touch. What to expect with only 64 MB RAM though :pac:

does OS 3.0 mean that voice commands work? Or is that only on the iPhone?

Only on the iPhone 3GS which is a shame really because it's a OS feature.

Give it time, voice commands and video recording will be on the 3G and original iPhone soon, hackers are at work :)
