New home hifi setup help

There was a fire in my parents house and the reasonable high end hifi system and speakers we had from the 80's were destroyed.

My dad has asked me to find him a new setup. Past mp3 players and headphones I have no clue though. We had about 3 or 4 separate units before but my dad want's a more all in one setup now. I'm thinking one system for cd etc, one amp, one turntable (a good one as I have alot of records myself) and the majority of cash can go into the speakers. Maybe some type of wireless surround setup if they are any good.

I wasn't given a budget but 1 or 2 grand is doable I think. Any recommendations? Is there any decent hifi stores in Dublin worth having a look around?

well forget the wireless aspect if you want any sort of quality. They don't mix!

Predictably I'd suggest a trip out to Cloney in Blackrock and have a look at their second hand stuff. They will also have new gear (see http://www.cloneyaudio.com/ideas.shtml) which provides good quality on a budget. Either their 'system 2' at €1,200 or 'system 3' at €2,500 would fit the bill.

€1200/2500 doesn't sound like a budget to me!

That's entry level hifi. It's not a cheap pursuit.

Have a look at the Naim Uniti.

As a one box solution it is mighty interesting.

those Naim boxes are supposed too be very good but any one box system is a cul-de-sac. At least with sepatares you have the option of upgrading at some stage.

    Agreed completely.

I'm considering a Uniti for the study as opposed to a main system, and for the price, it is hard to get as neat a separates system of that quality for the price.

Even considering using it for the computer speakers too (probably a bit overkill, but you have to admit, it'd be hard switching on those glorious Dell desktop yokies with that in the same room) :D

How much is the Naim? Not that I'm thinking of getting one or anything.:D

£2000 or €2300 I believe. If only the we had worse weather. I can't stand buying HiFi gear when the sun is shining.

unfortunately I can still be tempted. neither rain nor sleet nor snow.

That's a lot of money for a one box. A touch of the "lifestyle" system maybe.

OP try www.richersounds.ie or the Philips store on Dame Street they offer all boardies 10% discount and RS always have great deals.
It seems the rest of the posts have gone off the topic.
