Going to Venice end of Sept for 5 days. Four of us travelling together. Accomodation seems expensive. Can anyone recommend reasonable hotel or apartment accomodation?
    Thx

venice is stupidly expensive if staying on the island, lots of much cheaper accommodation in the surrounding towns, many of which (e.g. treviso) have excellent public transport link to venice day and night

End of Sept is the perfect time to go, not to packed and still warm enough.

We went early Oct last year and rented an appartment using:

It will be as dear as a Hotel but you have a lot more independence. As for what area to stay in, Its not that big a place so everywhere is close by and the water buses are very regular, make sure you buy a 3 or 5 day pass, dont pay for single trips, you can get them at the airport.

    Have a great time.

Yes, you'll pay through the nose to stay in Venice itself.

Book somewhere in Mestre - it's right beside Venice but cheaper to stay there, and there's regular buses and trains going between them so getting there is simple (10 mins).

Venice is really expensive to stay in - the "island" of Giudecca is where we stayed a couple of times - it is a little less expensive that the main island but expensive none the less. Giudecca is the strip looking directly at the main island San Marco etc and if a fabulous place to stay. There are regular waterbuses so that is no worry. Also you may find somewhere up the Sant Elena end of the main island. Is lovely there and is a waterbus ride or a leisurely walk to the "centre".

Staying off the islands on the mainland (the "Veneto" as far as I remember) is not the same as staying in Venice itself - if you can find an apartment that you can afford on one of the Venitian islands itself would be so much better if you can do it!

I stayed here. Loved it. Newly refurbished. Clean. Great location. Great breakfast. 35 euro a night.

Mestre is a horrible industrial port I booked a hotel there and left shortly after.if you can stay on lido.

I stayed in Trevisio. Train ride to Venice was €2 and train station very central. Beautiful town. Old fashioned and easy to just relax in. Hotel was reasonable (can't remember the name but it was a 4* only a few miles from the airport). The town in expensive like everywhere in Italy. Certainly a good base to explore around the areas. Worth a trip to Lake Garda etc.
I also took the ferry to Crotia for a few days and flew back from there. Nice place but quiet.

Must have been a different Mestre! We stayed there and found it a charming town, not at all like a port. Hotel we got was lovely too.. </shrugs>

We stayed in the Best Western Bisanzio - a stones throw from San Marco and just one 'street' in from the water front.

Being a chain, they tend to have good rates for 30-day advance puchase so you could give them a try.

Be careful though - Best Western have another Bisanzio in another town nearby (good work, whoever allowed that one) so make sure it is the one in Venice.

If you are staying for 5 days, then I don't think you're going to get much change out of 2K for the 4 of you for accommodation alone. As above, you may be better off staying somewhere else in Italy and getting the train in to Venice a few mornings. Connections are pretty good so you won't have any problems getting there. There are any number of interesting towns in the area which are well linked to Venice.

    Mestre

Agree totally. We stayed here also and found it to be ideal for travelling to Venice. 10 mins on the train. Trains go every 3 minutes and you simply buy a 5 day pass which allows u to jump on and off anytime u like.

    three of us stayed here:

it was nice, reasonable price and could not have been more central - 5 mins walk to st mark's sq. the staff were so friendly too - they come and meet you at the vaporetto stop

Wish you'd been around when I was heading off.
We obviously ended up in an area that was highly industrialised.

We had a car and drove over the bridge and got the ferry to Lido, as quick as we could away from it.

Excuse me for jumping in on the OP's query, but I'm looking for some additional information.

I'm planning a trip for my parents to Venice for about 3 days. I had been intending to arrange it for September, but the accomodation prices in August appear to be less expensive ( I have not done an extensive search yet). Is this usually the case?
My concern about August is that it might be very busy and very hot. They are in their late 60's, so I don't want them to be exhausted when they should be enjoying a relaxing break.

The suggestion by Moonbaby looks good. It's in the Dorsoduro area. Any knowledge of this part of the city? Safe? Convenient for the main sights?

The trip does not have to be in August/September, so any suggestions of better months to visit the city are welcome.

    Thanks.

Stayed here last year in August, there was 4 girls in one very large and nicely decorated room. I cost about €180 if I remember correctly, Email them and they'll give you room options, very nice small hotel, its where you want to be, close to vaporetto, 5min walk to St Marks, nice breakfast, I found it to be perfect really!
