I have a cheapo-de-luxe DVD player I got in Tesco for about 20 euro that plays DivX (avi) files without needing any conversion.

normonbond, kindly read the charter and think carefully before your next post. I'm sure there's lots of guides out there on how to convert "elephants dream".

www.videohelp.com is a good resource for video conversion.

No recomendations from me on where to get movies.. treading on a fine line there.

however, do you have a XBox 360 or PS3? it gets a bit more complicated on the old XBox, but it can be done too. streaming the movies over your network is simple and quick, no need for new HDD or cables (might need a cat5 for the XBox?) or anything. Tversity does the job fine.

also +1 on VLC player, maybe from a laptop using an HDMI cable, that is, do you have a laptop, and does it have HDMI out?
