Jewish couple sues over light sensor at holiday flats

Does this strike anyone else as pure insanity ? Does ANYONE think they are they right to sue ?

    My vote would be NO.

35 families may have to remove a light sensor from their property & pay legal costs due to the orthodox jewish couple who insist it violates their rights.

Jewish couple sues over light sensor at holiday flats

    http://www.interfaith.org/2009/06/21/jewish-couple-sues-over-light-sensor-at-holiday-flats/

    by David Masters

An Orthodox Jewish couple are suing neighbours at their holiday flat in Dorset because new motion sensors installed in the flat’s communal hallway force them to break the laws of the Sabbath.

Dr Dena Coleman, headteacher of a Jewish Orthodox school, and her husband Gordon, claim they cannot leave or enter their holiday flat on Saturdays, the Jewish Sabbath, because to do so would switch on the hallway light, breaching biblical laws.

Orthodox Jews believe the biblical law against lighting fires on the Sabbath extends to switching on electric lights.

The Colemans contend that the motion sensor activated lights violate their human rights, and are suing the flats’ management company for failing to accommodate their religion.

If the Colemans’ allegation is upheld, the other 35 owners of the seaside flats in Bournemouth will be liable for court costs.

A letter from the Colemans to the other 35 flat owners said: “Faced with a situation where we could never again have full use of our flat, we were left with no alternative but to seek legal advice.”

It added that solicitors had advised them they have a ’strong’ claim.

The couple said they will drop the case if a switch to override the motion sensor is installed and the management company compensates them for legal costs.

Neighbours at the flats are frustrated at the Colemans taking legal action.

“There has been a meeting about it and many of the residents are not happy,” one resident said.

“There is a feeling that things should not be changed just to suit people in one flat when everyone else is happy with it.”

Another resident said that by taking legal action, the Colemans had “blown out of all proportion” the dispute over motion sensors.

“They did come to a meeting and put their point of view forward,” the resident said.

“The general view was that despite any differences the matter should be resolved as quickly as we can. ”

The Colemans say they bought the flat six years ago on the understanding that motion sensors would not be installed in communal areas.

Feck them, tell them to wear blindfolds. Might be kinky too.

Are they allowed outside on the Sabbath seeing as the sun is a giant ball of fire?

Well if they feel that strongly about it, just fcukin' stay inside on Saturdays, what a load of rubbish

If they are genuine people and not just after a quick few bob, I'm sure a sensible Orthodox rabbi could put their minds at ease in minutes.

The other residents should turn off the lights every time they come and go. Let them fall and break their necks if that's what they want.

    Starting fires is the problem,

Now if they lit the Sun however.....

They don't give Jews a good name!

Surely if switching on a light on the Sabbath is against jew-rules then so is being in a holiday home, fcuking tossers.

Sure didn't God light the Sun. :pac:

(Is God even part of the Jewism?)

(Why do I capitalise god? He's only a pedobear anyway.)

A rabbi would tell them they are correct.

No lighting or putting our fires during the sabbath. Only exception is where is there is life in danger.

If it wasn't for that line I'd say they're idiots that are just chancing their arm looking for money but if they brought it up before buying and they where told there would be no motion sensors I'd say they have a good case.

Easy solution would be to leave the lights on the whole time and send them the bill, or just install timer switches.

Allowances should never be made because of Religion. What a fckn joke. People want to just live their lives and have to put up with this fckn crap from these crazy devouts.

Imposing religious beliefs on others through the legal system, again.

And some people are actually opposed to a secular society.

Why is this about Religion and not about an agreement made when buying the apartment ?

I don't think they've a right case as they aren't actually doing anything. They walk in, lights on, isnt that handy!

I used to turn lights on for them when i worked next to a bunch of them in prague. I reckon it was more work for them to come out and get me than it would have been to just flick 3 switches.

I'd be more concerned with that other domestic power source leaking all around my holiday home.

    runs away and hides.

I don't think law should uphold religious claims but they asked about it before they moved in. if the company had been honest all of us wouldn't have been able to indulge in such blatent anti-jewish banter and they would be happily be keeping their religion to themselves

the legal system should uphold peoples right not to have contracts etc broken.

/i realise this is AH

I reckon Dr Coleman probably owns the School she works at and is looking to drum up a few more punters for the new term by proving just how "orthodox" she is.

    Cheaper than advertising with google.

Yes, but they are not switching the light on - it is automatic. Just as 'they' would not be switching street lights on in the dark.
One can get ridiculous in following 'laws' to the letter. I think someone else pointed that out a few years ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,368 ✭✭✭Daroxtar

1/ Due to the lightbulbs being a vacuum they have no oxygen inside. With no oxygen it is impossible to ignite a fire. The light is merely irradessence, not fire. FACT!!!! Therefore they havent a fkn leg to stand on.
2/ Where exactly in the book of iron age fairytales that these gimps use to make other peoples lives harder does it mention Electricity or indeed motion sensors?

Its hard to know who to thump first - the couple or any fool who takes them seriously.

Technical you can say they are switching on the light as it's their movement witch is triggering the light to come on.

They have no control over it though so I don't see how they can be on the wrong side of their religion. But the point is they allegedly specifically discussed the lights before buying the house and where assured there would be no motion senor lights. If you don't get what you pay for then you have a right to complain about it.

Would you not think that if god had a problem with it he'd sort it out for them?

But, as silly a case as it sounds, if they really did buy the place with the understanding that the lights get replaced, then I hope they should win. I hate management companies more than fundamentalists! I'm curious why it took them six years to realise, though.

The real irony here is that the bible strictly forbids suing others.

Apparently in Israel, the lifts have a 'Sabbath mode' where instead of operating normally, they stop at each and every floor, so the poor dears don't have to suffer the ignominy of pressing a button with a little light inside. I'm normally quite tolerant of these kinds of things, but this just pathetic, sorry.
