Last September it appeared that Carr was finished. His choice was the League of Ireland, or the footballing wilderness. He chose the latter. However, he has enjoyed a new lease of life under Alex McLeish at Birmingham City (who decided to sign him up just before Christmas). He had equally be offered a second chance by QPR, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Hull City. Since his move to Birmingham, Carr has been something of a success, resulting in a contract extension of two years. This has given him a chance to restart a Premiership career, which has flagged since his Newcastle move in 2004.

However, is there any validity in a call to re-engage Carr with the Irish national set up. I realise he has retired twice, but a game under Trappatoni may be irresistable, as it was to Dean Keily and Steve Finnan. Would there be any benefit to bringing him back into the set up ?

Yes, I'm in favour of it. I made this point in the last international thread. We don't have great options in defence at the moment (even though St. Ledger has stepped up quite well thus far) so I would be in favour of giving him a call-up.

I don't think it will happen as Trap has shown himself to be reluctant calling in the experienced guys even if they might merit a spot (ie Carsley) but I'd take Stephen Carr over Paul McShane at right-back any day of the week.

Does he even want to come back?

AFAIR he was unhappy playing international football, and quite a disruptive influence on the team.

well he'd certainly be a better option than mcshane at right back IMO. Depends if he's in the right frame of mind for a comeback. But seriously, which back line fills you with more confidence? Carr-dunne-o'shea-kilbane or Mcshane-Dunne-O'Shea-Kilbane??:D

if he initiates it, it'd be nice to see him back in the squad. I wouldn't want to see Trap busting a gut though to get him back.
