Getting by without the bench

    I've been very poor in terms of getting to the gym lately but hoping to get back on track this week coming - especially with my eating.

    Previously I had been starting on the bench but without someone to spot me I've been afraid of pushing myself too hard, which kind of negates the purpose.

    I'm thinking of leaving the bench out and maybe replacing it with something else... would I suffer too much if I just did chin/pull ups, dips, deadlift and squat?

    Would push ups, dumbell bench presses etc. be adequate replacements for the chest?

    Absolutely, in fact the change would probably be a good thing.

    You could also try smith bench, flat or incline. I don't know how many people would agree with me on that, but for incline at least its not bad. Worth a shot anyways.

    I thought the smith machine was best avoided at all costs, or is it a case of it being better than nothing (or second best to a proper bench)?

    I think its ok for incline at least, the rom on that lift is fairly up and down anyways. It depends on the person though, if you feel its uncomfortable don't do it.

    Just do your benching in the squat rack, problem sloved.

    Problem there is my gym only has one squat rack, which isn't even enough for the people that wish to do squats. It certainly isn't enough for people who want to use the rack for other exercises.

    Dumbell bench press is pretty much as good as regular barbell benching afaik, and may have some benefits over it.

    I don't think you'd suffer if you left out the bench press. Dips, standing presses, push ups,and weighted dips when you build up your strength and definition.

    We rarely bench down at our place, can't say it's had many negative implications.
