What to do when you're game deserts you - keep playing comps - practice - rest up?

This is perhaps aimed more at the more 'human' golfers among us who are obviously way less consistent than our illustrious 'single figure' friends and also somewhat inspired by my recent post on “how did you score in your last round” and my contemplation of resting the clubs for a couple of weeks on account of playing muck.

When you are on a bad run do you keep plugging away, hit the range or give it a rest for a while? I had five 0.1’s in a row last year and after today I'm at 3 in a row. I am slow to keep going out regularly and playing every weekend knowing I am just going to keep getting 0.1's. My goal is to get as low as possible. Last year on reflection I decided I got waaaaaaay too many ‘expected’ 0.1's back by playing when I knew I wasn't playing well or the conditions were bad. So now that I'm all over the shop again, I reckon if I keep going out I'll keep getting 0.1's because I'm nowhere near my potential and that's the last thing I want to do. It's hard enough to get cut so I don't want to cough them back up so cheaply.

    So what to do...

    A. Keep playing – 0.1’s are a direct reflection of your ability so your handicap needs to be allowed to adjust to your current level of consistency
    B. Hit the range/chipping green – if you’re worried about 0.1’s you can practice ‘offline’ then get back to comps when you’re back in the slot
    C. Leave the golf alone for a few weeks – you’ll come back with renewed enthusiasm/vigour for the game and will eventually get back to decent striking.

I voted (b) but I would say spend the practice time on your short game.

If you are a high handicap then you shouldnt really be trying to fix your own swing. In reality you probably dont have a clue whats wrong and can "fix" something by adding a new bad thing to counteract it.

As regards not playing when you "know" you are going to get 0.1 back. If the conditions are that bad then you probbaly wont get one as most people will be outside the buffer zone making it a NQ comp. If the conditions are fine and you are still that far outside your buffer zone (probably 2 or 3 shots depending on your "human" status :D )
The biggest mistake I see from people who are not playing to their handicap is that they are trying to play better than their handicap.
For example, if you are not able to play to 18 at the moment, then you have no business going for greens in regulation unless you are hitting no more than a 7 iron. Otherwise you are costing yourself more shots and you are saving.
Play to 18 first then start to take something off it.

Sometimes a break is good if you cant even face working on it, but I prefer to practice the short game until I get so sick of it I cant wait to play some holes!

    Best of luck!:o
