Ripping Movies to a DS

    Hi all,

Heading on a driving holiday to South of France with two young kids and one of the time killing strategies for them on the initial long drive (8 hours) is to pop a couple of movies onto their DS's. One has a DSi with an 8Gig SDHC card installed in a Supercard DE Onei cart and the other is standard DS with a 2Gig R4 card installed.

I have no idea how to even go about "ripping" dvd's to these cards. I've never "ripped" anything so am really looking for a link to a piece of software which will step me through it or some kind soul to outline the steps for me.

Thanks in advance for the help.

    Ben

Fairly sure that subsequent posters will have better idea than me. But my minimal knowledge follows!

Moonshell is a handy way to play films on the DS. You need to convert video to DPG. http://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/index.php/Moonshell

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nv6_dZn6mzM Is a handy guide.

http://moonbooks.net/downloads/films is where there are some copyright free "classics", they used to have cartoons on the site, but I haven't used it for a while.

If you want to transfer DVD films to DPG first you will need to remove the encryption. I use a bit of bought software called DVDFab. I think they give you a 30 day free trial so enough time to copy the films for your hols. What I like about this is the straightforwardness (is that a word?).

You insert the DVD, it breaks the encryption then converts it into DPG in one go.

I'm sure there are loads of other ways of going about it, and just to say I never really found the quality of films on the standard DS to be that good, maybe they are better on the DSi and maybe I just haven't tinkered with the settings to get it just right. Good luck with it.

Oh, and there is also a dedicated media player coming out for the DS, but ? wont be out in time for your holiday.

dvdfab sounds great, had a lot of bother myself changing formats from one to the other to get the dpg conversion to work.
what i would say though is its a feckn nuisance when a little finger hits a button on the ds starting the movie over again and from memory i dont think there is a way to FF or skip forward.
id say its a much better option to get a small dvd player for the hassle of changing the movies to dpg (conversion takes ages-overnight job iirc), getting a decent size memory card to store the movies (2gb will hold 1 movie plus games) and if your kids are small, the tears when a movie skips back and they cant understand why it happened. we'll be bringing both when we fly to italy later in the year or else buying a cheap dvd player over there.

I would probably agree that a little DVD player is handier, especially if you could rip a few films onto a dvd. We record a whole day of Disney,Nick Jr or whatever onto DVD and that gives them a variety.

On the DS, you can skip forward and backward with Moonshell 2 but you are right it is fiddly at times.

    R+Left or Right: Seek Back/Forward by 1%
    R+Up or Down: Seek Back/Forward by 5%

I have hope the iplayer will be a proper, fully spec'd media player for the DS. Apparently its going to cost $45 USD though so it would want to give decent results for that.

So its cheaper than previously discussed, just under $36 dollars.

Plays WMV, MPEG and AVI as well as other formats so hopefully it will be a worthwhile buy.

I will probably end up getting one.
