The PDC/ PDPA have announced today that Irish PDPA members are ineligible to compete in the 2009 Irish Matchplay Championship.

How is the seeding going to work now, & what players does this ruling effect?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,182 ✭✭✭dionsiseire

So no professional can take part (in the theory that joining the PDPA means your pro)

so shane o connor cannot enter for example?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,413 ✭✭✭Dartgod

No seeding now - - - an OPEN draw for all players.

The competition is open to all Irish residents {male and female} over sixteen years of age EXCEPT PDPA members.

How many PDPA members are there here, and who are they? I know of Shane O'Connor and Mick MacGowan, are there others?

i think Jacko Barry may still be technically a PDPA player but that wont be for much longer, not sure when his membership expires

Seems slightly odd that the best players are excluded from the Irish world championship qualifier.
Spose they'll qualify through their ranking anyway?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 945 ✭✭✭padr81

rules out alot actually jacko barry, mick mcgowan, mick barry, felix mc brearty, shane oconnor think i seen a few more on the order of merit too.

don't think so, last year we had shane o connor and jon mcgowan can't remember Mick Mcgowan or Jacko being in it.

At the last count nine Irish players are in or around the Top 200 on the PDC Order of Merit and most of them are playing regularly on the PDC circuit.

    Mick McGowan
    Brendan Dolan
    Jacko Barry
    John Magowan
    Felix McBrearty
    James Keogh
    Ray Farrell
    Shane O'Connor
    Geoff Wylie

The PDPA do not issue a list of it's paid-up members.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 547 ✭✭✭iseethelight

Does anyone know the rationale of excluding paid up members from competing in this? It seems stupid not to have the best Irish players able to qualify for the world championship.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,413 ✭✭✭Dartgod

Last year Irish PDPA members had a choice of qualifying competitions - either the Irish Matchplay or the PDC Qualifiers in Wolverhampton.

There are no PDC Qualifiers this year and PDPA members qualify through the Orders of Merit.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 547 ✭✭✭iseethelight

Looking from the outside it seems as if their making the worlds a tournament for the top 32 and a handfull of mickey mouse qualifiers. Can't see the point in having no PDC qualifiers, its going to seriously detract from the standard imo.

Qualification criteria for the Ladbrokes.com World Championship as per PDPA website :-

2009/10 Ladbrokes.com PDC World Darts Championship
    Cut-off date: December 3 2009
Seeds: Top 32 in Order of Merit

Qualifying Players: Top 32 in Order of Merit
Top 16 in Players Championship Order of Merit not otherwise qualified
Top 4 in European Order of Merit not otherwise qualified
Top 3 in North American Order of Merit not otherwise qualified
Up to 15 further international invitations at the PDC’s discretion

So you could enter this comp, win it, join the PDPA in order to play in world championships and then next year your not allowed to play in Irish Matchplay because your a member of the PDPA.:confused:

This seems very strange and very badly organised by the PDC. It's a joke that the best players we have in this country probably won't qualify for the biggest tournament there is. I have lost a lot of respect for the PDC with this decision.

It's a strange one alright, they should have stuck to the old 4 quallifers for the City West tournment where anyone could have quallifed!!

I think this is a disgrace !! How is anyone expected to further their game and maybe make a few quid at the game if the PDC are gonna keep throwing obstacles in front of them??:mad:

The likes of Mick , Jacko , Shane are trying to get a start in the PDC and now they are being punished :mad:

I used to love going to the citywest for the all ireland qualifiers. Realistically it was the only chance a Joe Bloggs had of being on tv , earn a few quid, play against the best players there are out there so BOO to the PDC :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Lads, let us not confuse the World Championship and the World Grand Prix and I will outline the facts on both competitions as they pertain to the Irish players.

After many years of lobbying the PDC agreed for a competition to be organised in Ireland with the winner to qualify for the 2009 Ladbrokes.com
World Championship, thus, the Irish Matchplay Championship was born !
Irish PDPA members had three ways of qualifying for the World Championship i.e. the Order of Merit, Irish Matchplay or the PDC Qualifiers over in England.
Felix McBrearty qualified through the Order of Merit.
The other Irish members had a choice of either playing in the Irish Matchplay or the PDC Qualifiers.
Two of these entered the Irish Matchplay and thirteen opted to travel across for the Qualifiers.
Shane O'Connor won the Matchplay and John Magowan and Brendan Dolan won through from the Qualifiers.
The PDC are not organising a qualifying competition this year so the only route for the Irish players is now through the Order of Merit.
The PDPA requested the PDC not to allow it's Irish members to compete in the Irish Matchplay because it would have been unfair on the UK-based PDPA members who do not have a similar competition to qualify from.

Regarding the Sky Bet World Grand Prix Qualifiers this was the biggest darts event in Ireland in recent years with players travelling from all corners of the country in the hope of being one of the four qualifiers to appear on Sky Sports against the World's top players.
In 2007 550 players entered for the Qualifiers at the City West.
The reason that the Qualifiers were scrapped was that some of the Irish PDPA members put pressure on the PDC {through the PDPA} to discontinue the Qualifiers and give the four qualifying places to the top four Irish players on the PDPA Players' Championship Order of Merit.
The PDC agreed to this and hundreds of ' ordinary ' Irish players lost their chance of darting fame.
No Irish qualifying competition was held in 2008 at the City West and none will be held this year.

But, the good news is that all of these ' ordinary ' Irish players still have an opportunity of making a name for themselves on Sky Sports by entering the Irish Matchplay and follow in the footsteps of the late Tom Kirby who showed us the way to the PDC door !

Cheers for clearing that up Dartgod. It makes a little more sense now but unfortunately it looks like we are only going to have one qualifier for the World Championships which won't be the countries top player although it does give like sof myself a shot at it :)

I was very annoyed when they scrapped the World Grand Prix qualifiers. If the likes of Mick McGowan really are the countries top players then they should be able to win through that competition and qualify. It really was a great way for up and coming players to make a name for themselves. It was a bad decision by the PDC but I suppose the top Irish players are mostly to blame.

In that sense it's hard to have too much sympathy for them over the World Championships qualifiers.

That is a point I was going to make yesterday, it's funny now that the lads who got rid of CityWest are now in this situation (not all the Irish PDC players asked to scap it just a few lads who would have been better off improving their darts for the circurt that doing that) you know who you are lads and it serves you right!!

I think its an absolute disgrace that 4 or 5 players who think there the greatest things since sliced bread can dictate to 100s of others who want to compete at the highest level.Im sure most people on here wouldnt have a clue who the top players in the country even are.And winning things in ireland doenst make you any more special to the rest of us.Maybe these players have more time on there hands to practce to travel to comps at the weekend ,but it doesnt give them the right to in my opinion put everyone else down. (or look down on everyone else) Where they affraid of losing out in qualifiers to some unknown.I dont think there as good as they like to think they are good yes world class NO.

Because of the PDC decision to exclude Irish PDPA members from the Irish Matchplay Rule 9 regarding Seeding does not now apply.
An Open Draw will now be made.

The closing date for receipt of entries has been extended to Wednesday, August 19th.

Don't know the answer to that - - - but there are eighty {80} players entered and paid to date.

    - - - and the phone is hopping ! ! !

No telephone entries accepted - - - get your entry form and money in the post.

I thought i had missed the entry date for this though if i have a week to enter i may just enter this now

Gotta somehow get to a post office, its so awkward having to get a postal order made up and then send it off when your working and are nowhere near a post office that i know of.

Should consider setting up digital method of entering, And email and a paypal payment for those more technically savvy

Paypal accounts can extract money directly into an irish bank account so the money would easily be obtained from the entrants
