Have a Dell Inspiron 2600 bought in 2001 and still going reasonably well. It doesn't need to be repaired as such, but it can be pretty slow at times. Lately it's crashing on Facebook but not on other sites. Also, when I got a new mp3 player and phone it couldn't upload some of the software, don't think it is updated enough to recognise it (have Windows XP). I am no computer expert so alot of this is probably because I don't have it updated/debugged properly, although I do as much as I can. Is there anywhere in Dublin I could leave it in to get sorted without it costing enough that I would be as well to buy a new one? It has all my photos and music so I would love to get as long out of it as possible. Thanks :)

Go to update.microsoft.com and it will scan your computer and tell you the updates you need. That should give you all the updates you need. You might need to download an anti virus app and scan your computer also. I wouldnt go to a compuer shop to have them fix it unless you really have no choice. If your computer wont boot up and you need to get files back for example.

Facebook can be pretty heavy. Its the control bar down the bottom. Runs on activeX controls and Java, you could check for a java update. What Internet browser do you use?

If you want to get it done, MicroPro in Rathfarnham are very professional.

Make sure you backup all your photos and music to some other medium (external drive, CDs, DVDs, whatever you can) if you havent already. If the hard-drive is 8 years old, you definitely want to get everything backed up asap, should be the #1 priority.

I would back everything up and simply reformat the drive. though I wonder if you have a recovery disk.partition? Might not be as easy for you.

If it were though it would run pretty slick afterward. Just to reformat and install SP3 from a DVD.

Yes I have noticed the issue with the control bar down the bottom of Facebook. I have run updates and while most of them install, I find sometimes the computer just freezes in the middle of the installation so i'm not sure.

Will try a Java update thanks :o
