France centre Mathieu Bastareaud is to return home from Les Bleus' tour of the southern hemisphere after reportedly being assaulted in Wellington in the early hours of this morning.

The 20-year-old Stade Francais player was apparently set upon by a group of four or five people at 3am local time in New Zealand following France's 14-10 defeat to the All Blacks, in which he did not feature.

Bastareaud is believed to have suffered severe facial injuries and will undergo tests this week to determine the extent of the damage.

The player has not made a complaint but the French federation (FFR) are expected to report the incident to their New Zealand counterparts.

France conclude their tour Down Under with a Test against Australia in Sydney on Saturday.

Kiwis not covering themselves in glory again, they started throwing bottles and other objects at the french team after their victory in first test.

Appalling supporters, the worst in world rugby.

The camera was panning the crowd in Carrisbrook and you could see Frenchies getting pelted with missiles

NZ aren't really doing their reputation any favours. Over the years certain players and supporters have repeatedly represented themselves as petulant, violent scumbags. Pity really.

Unless you know something that the rest of us don't, I'd say this generalising about New Zealanders is uncalled for.

The incident apparently happened in the early hours of the morning in the city, in circumstances undisclosed to the general public and by people whose identity, at this moment in time, is also undisclosed to the general public.

they must have been either drunk, stupid or highly offended about something because... who the hell would attack Mathieu Bastareaud! he is a monster!

It might be a bit unfair on New Zealanders, but judging by their fans it's not unaccurate.

I've met plenty of New Zealanders, and they've been lovely people, but if the fans are throwing stuff at the French because they lost a game that's really not on.

You must remember that unlike other nations bar South Africa in New Zealand rugby is so mainstream that of course this carry on will happen. Imagine if all english and Irish football fans followed rugby that historic meeting at Croker would of been a full blown riot!

What I found really shocking was the news reports about it after, new zealand press didn't make a big deal of it and just put it down to drunken students messing around becasue dunedin is a student city, can't stand kiwi rugby supporters or the kiwi press.

I wasn't aware he got stabbed?

It apparently happened some distance away and on another island...in Wellington

I'd wait to find out the full side of the story before condeming a whole nation. The fact he doesn't want to report and basically hope it all goes away is a bit strange.

Dunedin is a university town and they usually sell cheap tickets to the uni students. The "scarfies", as the students there are known as, have the reputation of being drunken, brawling, drug fueled lunatics. (I should know, I studied there for a semester)

Unfortunately any Kiwi i have met (i have met well over 50 in my life) has been quite an unpleasant individual. Truly an arrogant race, i don't know why but thats been my personal experiences

I've met some really nice Kiwis over the years but a disproportionate number of assholes as well. Unfortunately I've found the same with Australians and South Africans - mostly the men - who are full of obnoxious bravado and are a bit thick. It's a gross generalisation of course but it's quite noticeable.

while i wouldn't be the biggest NZ fans fan some of the generalizations here are pretty bad.

There's nothing wrong with using generalisations. If you don't like it, get off the internet.

I have found NZ fans so friendly until you start talking to them about rugby. Then the arrogance and cockiness oozes out!

I know many Kiwis and im proud to call each one my friend. I have never met or come across one as you describe them in this thread so i cant really comment. But this is still a shocking incident to happen to a player who is only 20.

I wonder will the NZ press even mention this?

You know nothing about the incident to even begin to comment about its details. Nothing. Late at night. On the town. A fight. Thats about all thats out on it.

You and other convenient tribalists are hijacking this whole hoohah to blurt your own pre-conceived prejudices towards Aussies, Kiwis and South Africans.
    Just sad.

According to French newspaper, Le Monde, Bastareaud doesn't want to press charges.

Some real crass generalisations going on here and it's being let fly, strange.
I too have met plenty kiwis down the years and none of them come close to the above descriptions.
