I notice this guy came in for a lot of slack on the board for his commentary yesterday. I actually think the guy is a breath of fresh air and delivers some much needed lols and excitement in to the RTE GAA commentary.
His work on the basketball during the Olympics was always good entertainment even if he got a little carried away with the american basketball lingo.
In conclusion I'd have him over that dry sh1te Marty Morrissey any day.

He did my head in. I just felt like telling him "I can hear you fine! You don't need to shout all the time!!!"

There were even some basic facts he failed to get right. He complemented the Limerick full back line on their wonderful display when Noel Connors of Waterford cleared the ball away ffs

"he shakes...and bakes...and puts it over the bar"

    ...I rest my case! :D

There was nothing perticularly wrong with it, it was just....

Well you expected him to come out with:

"Mullane Shoots for 3 from downtown" everytime Mullane went for goal.
or "That 5 team fouls for Limerick, and Waterford will be having shots from now on"

Just sounded wrong. Can you imagine Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh commentating on a Liverpool vs Man United game?

Prendergast put the ball over the bar in the last couple of "plays" and the guy orgasmed -did anyone notice that?
The thing was he was unmarked and Waterford were well ahead - why the excitement?

Have to say he makes far less mistakes than Ger Canning or Podge & Rodge's brother. Canning has to be the worst commentator ever, not a clue whats going on most of the time. Its obvious he has the American thing going on from his time in America as a basketballer but he is something different. Any fella from Cork and called McCarthy will more than likely know his hurling.

    Tim McCarthy FTW!! :D

Ger hit a new low during Kilkenny-Galway when he enlightened us as to the solar-powered nets behind the goalposts

mind you, I'd take him over Jim Carney any day

He seemed to wax lyrical about that point even though Prendergast missed the ball with a pull on the ground and then put it over from straight in front of the posts completely unmarked.

One of Timmy's gem's with about 10 mins to go:

"Ball is played to Mullane and he shoots...(while ball in air) as you said Donal this is Plan A,B,C,D...maybe this is Plan E!" :D

You've clearly never seen the other Timmy McCarthy (try to) play so :D

A class commentator is a class commentator, regardless of the sport imo.

What's wrong with the excitement? A lot of these games need all the injections of excitement they can get.

Exactly. I don't mind Canning that much but Morrissey and Carney have been known to induce comas.

Thats not really much of a qualification in all fairness. This guy would seriously do my head in if I had to listen to him commentating on a lot of the major matches. Its alright keeping him for games on the internet and the odd highlights if RTE are stuck for bodies.
