o2 modem problem when changed to another laptop

I have one of those o2 modems for internet access, it works fine normally but sometimes especially if I change it to another laptop a notice appears saying 'wireless modem does not exist or is unrecogniseable'.
The only way to get it going then is to remove the programme totally from the laptop and then reinstall it, then it will work.
Sometimes this notice comes up when the modem hasn't been removed from the laptop and it is really annoying.
Does anyone know how can I stop this happening?

Could be a dodgy cable or mini-USB connection on the modem, if it's an E220 or E270. I've seen the same error with mine - turned out to be the inside of the mini-USB on the modem was a little bent/twisted, carefully prying it back to a central position fixed the errors, presumably improving the connections between the pins inside the modem and on the cable.

I'm getting a backup modem though - would be a disaster if I was left without being able to use it. Getting one with proper USB ports.

    hey

I had the same problem (with white one) since May 09. so I gave it back to fix it. It came back after 2 weeks brand new, but not working again. I had to go back to shop and claim it back. 14 days passed and no modem back. lady in the shop told me these modems give alot of problems.
so much hassle and no internet for a month. So I wrote them an email saying I will not pay as I was not using any internet for a month time. (they will tell you its not their fault cos they provide internet but modem is faulty-do not take this excuse they also need to provide good working device ) after long "conversation" and my persistance, she gave me month free.
but then, I rung COMREG (which i reccomend) and explained situation. they took my details and said the case is on. they advice me to lodge an official complaint also informing the case is followed by COMREG. After doing that I received a phone call from Manager (which I couldn't reach previously for so long time) and he offered me 60euro credit and upgrade of system which is a joke.

anyways, Im with 3G now, have 15GB upload montly for the same price and reception is much better and never have problem with modem jumping in and out.

Have a look for the Sierra Wireless 888 - O2 are selling them now with their BB packages. You should have a look at the O2 forums, and ask if you're due an upgrade. The modem is usually about €130 (IIRC), but you might be able to get it for €70-€80 with an upgrade offer. It's got a proper USB connection, and you can plug in a microSD card and use it as a memory stick as well.

O2 are rippino off people. The customer service in my opinion is very poor, and the data usage allowance is very small. What's more the remaining units will not transfer to next month (which would be cool). I think that this sytuiation will not change very soon, unless more competition will go on the market offering something better then that.

    here it is

Modem type -O2 Clear Broadband Plan & contract length -Data usage allowance* -Monthly charge -Modem price
    Compass™ 888 - 18 months- 10GB - €19.99 - €69
    12 month - 7.5 GB - €25 - €79
    30 days - 5 GB - €30 -€119

The thing is I must stick with o2 because 'three 'and vodafone don't work where I live.
I might try to upgrade to one of those newer modems.

I know that feeling, that sucks, I have 3G now and I can live only in bigger towns, nowhere in between.
