I got a replacement laptop charger and stupidly without thinking stuck it in and turned it on all while turned to the wrong voltage for the laptop. The laptop is a compaq presario and turned on for about 30 seconds and now won't turn on at all.

Did i fry it? any ideas or solutions

I feel like kicking myself because it was just forgetfulness!

I guess there'd be as much chance of frying the charger, particularly if it was anyway under spec. Having he wrong polarity might also fry it. If say you needed 15Volt and the PSU was giving 20 then that shouldn't be the problem the laptops voltage regulation circuits are fairly robust and I wouldn't be too worried if you had it set even higher.

What is the required voltage and what do you feed it?

If it went off after 30 seconds was it perhaps the laptop frying the PSU and thats the way the last PSU went because of a problem on the laptop itself?

What sort of output was the old charger putting out? Amps & Volts.

And what was the output of the new charger set to? Amps & Volts again.

    Might make sense to you

    old one - 18v

new one - set to either 5v or 20v

either way the laptop works when i take out the battery and run it off the charger,i've not tried the battery in it sinc eyesterday will do so later.

    Thanks all for replies
