Anybody had a listen yet? Its up on NPR's first listen series, I'm loving it. Just at the last song now and I must say its a good deal stronger than Begin to Hope. Opinions?

As long as there's at least one song as good as Samson I'll be looking out for it.

I like it, but I don't think it's quite as good as Begin to Hope. Some very strong tracks, but bit of a sag in the middle of the album.

    Still very good though

That'll be tough. Unless there are large slices of wonderbread.

Haven't gotten it yet but will be picking it up soon once the hangover fades.

Considering it's Regina though, I'm looking forward to it being a good album.

Just had a quick listen to it here. Really like 'Laughing With'. Not quite Samson standard... especially the final line but I like it, lovely lyrics.

The beginning of Human of the Year really reminds me of another of her songs but I can't put my finger on which... any ideas anyone?

Listening to it now, Laughing With is quite a good number. I quite liked The Calculation too, it's shaping up to be a good album so far.

I'm still listening to it, I really like the first half of Eet then there's the instrumental part and that kinda ruins it for me. Also love Blue Lips.

Laughing With and the last song, the name of which escapes me, are my early favourites I think.

Laughing With is an incredible song, but I've also taken to Folding Chair in a big way. A solid effort, at least on-par with Begin To Hope, which I find is one of very few albums I find I tend to play from start to finish often enough.

Plenty of it to download on the Hypem.com (Mp3 blogs, so nobody will kick your front door in ;)) for listening to on the go. Regina Spektor is one of the artists whose albums I always buy but for some reason, on the basis of her originality. (Who the hell buys a Friendly Fires CD for example, luls)

    Which album to get first?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,153 ✭✭✭ronano

    I'd say mary ann gravedigger

it's collection of earlier tracks that were not properly released over here and gives good indication of her style

I second that, and you can get it in Tower Records too.

Begin to Hope is going quite cheap around the place too at the minute.
My favourite Regina Spektor tune is her cover of Cohens 'Chelsea Hotel' knocking around YouTube.

Having a listen now and seems decent enough - Laughing With is a fantastic song alright. Only have Begin to Hope (I really like around half the songs and could take or leave the others - Samson is brilliant though) and have been meaning to check out her earlier stuff.

+1 on Mary Ann Gravediggers, its a fantastic album. Oedipus is such a great song and Chemo Limo too, so sad and funny at the same time.

Recently picked up "Soviet Kitsch" on a whim, but wasn't overly impressed with it. Would you guys consider it a reasonable introduction to her work or should I have looked elsewhere?

I'd consider it a reasonable introduction mostly because it's the first one I picked up but "Begin To Hope" was the one that grabbed attention from most people when it came out (or rather a year or more after it came out) so it's more likely that it'd be a better jumping off point, or at least more likely that you'd like it based on a higher number of people liking it. If that's vaguely understandable. Having said that, perhaps you just don't like her stuff.

Cool, I'll pick that up so. Won't give up on her just yet! ;)

Does anyone have her album Songs? I was just looking at her wiki page there and it says that there's a song in that album called Samson, is this the same Samson as from Begin to Hope? Different version maybe? Anyone know?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,608 ✭✭✭✭sceptre

It's a different version of the same song. The Songs version is rather slower - and she sings it at a slightly higher pitch.

    Excellent new album

I prefer the samson on songs, her voice sounds nicer

I really like this new album, my favourite song is Eet, she went down an absolute storm in Glasto so I predict the same for Oxegen!:D

I'm going to see her tonight in Berlin. Can't wait! :D

Can't wait to see her Saturday at Oxegen. Just came across video for Man of a Thousand faces if anyone hasn't seen

What billing does she have at Oxegen? I hope she has enough time. I'm kind of amazed that she doesn't tour on her own more, it was really obvious at the Berlin gig that she's really at her best when she has time to interact with the crowd and play more of her quirky lil numbers. Apparently (because I don't know her whole back catalogue) she played a few songs in Berlin that aren't on cd anywhere, they were kinda random but really fun. Slightly wasted on the German crowd though, IMO.

She's on 6pm on the Saturday on the Heineken Green Spheres stage which is probably the biggest of the tent stages. I'd she has an hour max so it'll be a festival set alright but she should get time for some interaction fingers crossed. Her show at Tripod a couple of years ago was fantastic. She'll have to do her own healdine tour by the end of the year, early next year...
