Hey all just wondering about upgrading my processor in my Dell Inspiron 640m from this 1.83ghz Core Duo to this 2.33ghz Core Duo for 40 euro or is it not worth it?

It is a modest upgrade for not a lot of money. They are similar enough that you could look at it in simple % terms (ie 25% or whatever faster). Whether you'd notice that difference depends on how you use the computer, if it's just browsing the internet etc, probably not. If you were doing something like video encoding, you would definitely see a difference, like I say, a modest difference but noticeable nonetheless.

Obviously you'd need to make sure the CPU is supported, and also that you have some thermal paste (and cleaner).

Ram is obviously a good upgrade if you don't have a lot at the moment.

After ram, the hard-drive is one of the most noticeable upgrades on an older laptop (assuming you are running an old/slow drive). A newer generation drive (even IDE) will perform a lot better than the couple of years old drive that would have come stock in your computer. You'd see the difference in boot-up time, applications loading etc. Probably would be a better upgrade.

Yes it all checks out the CPU is supported,im running XP and have 2.5gb of Ram. I was just wondering about it being a worthwhile upgrade, because I dont think im going to be getting a new laptop anytime soon! So I'll buy the CPU and then get a hard drive after! :D

    Cheers for the reply!
