Cycling Benefits

    Hi All,

First time in this thread so please be gentle with me!! ;)

I want to loose some weight (1.5 - 2 stone) but HATE the gym. My OH cycles alot and we decided that it would be fun if I got a bike too (which I did last Saturday) This is great as it means we are no longer sitting around mon-thurs doing nothing.

So now we are going for long (at least an hour) cycles around the D6, D8 and D12 areas four nights a week. (we plan to keep this up)

My questions to you all is this: How beneficial is cycling? Will it help me (with diet obv) shed pounds or will it make me muscly? My bum is an area of concern for me...but is sitting on a bike gonna help?

Please don't ridicule me if these are stupid questions :o

    Thanks,
    Bootz

(oh if it helps I am mainly carrying excess weight on my butt, tummy, thighs)

You can't spot reduce, so if your curent weight is stable and you do the cycling you should loose weight everywhere.

"How beneficial is cycling?" - you will live longer, look better, and have more energy..that's just for starters!!
    Go for it!

I started cycling last summer although i did not do alot i bought a road bike(racer), now this year i started back around mid april, i was not overally over weight but i lost a stone. i agree the weight won't come off one area at once it's an overall thing, at the start i was not really eating right, but when i sorted that out the weight just keep coming off me. i am as fit as i have ever been and i was really fit when i was younger, i hate the gym too, but with cycling I do some charity cycles, races(i don't race, but train to do my best) what happens when you have a race or a charity event etc. to aim for, it really makes you try harder, you think about training etc. i built up to about 200 a week until i got injured a few weeks ago, and unlike the gym it gets really addictive. which i think is a good thing, i could never get addicted to the gym as it is boring as hell. get something you enjoy doing and it will stick with you for life. i only started last year, but i know i will be cycling for years to come as i enjoy it and the challenges it brings.

That's great...I would be happiest loosing weight all over :D

Yeah I love that I am actually seeing stuff and going places and not on a stationary gym bike!! Hopefully having started this thread will keep me motivated too!!
